- StefoniusExplorerFor what it's worth, 06Fargo, I care. When did poor grammar, spelling, and punctuation become a virtue in America?

No, they say Cummings.
They probably think it is actually spelled Cummings but everyone just drops the g when they say it outloud.
Yes, I know. My point was the people who say Cummings may be thinking that all the rest of us are sayin' it wrong by dropping the g, so they try to "do it right" by saying Cummings and spelling it Cummings.
But I think others gave the more likely explanation. Cummings is a more popular sir name than Cummins. - tpiExplorer"ing" is just a common word ending. Also often the "g" is dropped such as "whole lot of nothin." People may just think the g is being dropped when they hear it said correctly. Probably for some, like myself, I've seen "Cummins" in print more than I've heard it in conversation. So getting it right isn't hard.

I'll give a reasonable answer...
It's because Cummings is a more familiar name, as in Bob Cummings, an old entertainer/actor.

Also, if their buddies pronounce it that way, if you say Cummins then you're different from them and considered snooty. Then you become an outcast. I can't say I've ever heard it mispronounced in a Cummins shop.
I don't know if they actually know how to spell it, but I hear it alot, so in conversation I'll distinctly say Cummins a few times hoping they pick up on it. They never do.
I was just in a conversation with someone about my Discover pass. She kept calling it a Discovery pass, even after I said Discover. Spelling and pronunciation are not top priorities with many. - CroweExplorerLOL! The spelling police are at it again!
