Freezer forming ice on walls

Common especially in humid weather. Defrost it. No biggy.

The freezer is what cools the refrigerator. If the refer is cool enough, then turn it down a little at a time and then some of the ice should slowly disappear in the refrigerator. If you don't want to turn the refer down, then you have to either live with the ice or install a fan to circulate the air better in the refer. Sometimes if you keep your top shelf in the refer too full it can prevent the cold from going downwards to the bottom of the refer.

The OP is asking about frost in the freezer, not the fridge section.

I noticed that the refrigerator part is really cold. So I think I'll turn down that part and see what happens.

If the ice on the back wall of the freezer is over 1/4" or so, DEFROST IT.

Ice is a great insulator. And you want that back wall (the cooling unit) to be able to accept transfer heat from the interior.

I usually have to defrost my freezer every 2-3 weeks. I keep mine at 0 to -4 because we love hard ice cream. No biggie. Takes less than 5 min with a blowdryer.
It seems to accumulate more since we have been in Oregon the last 2 1/2 months.
We have a fan on our fins in the fridge which we keep at 35-36 degrees, and don't get any ice on the fridge fins.
Get a good wireless fridge/ freezer themostat on Amazon... The Acurite. Worthwhile investment

It's a lot easier to defrost it IF you do it before the ice builds up.
1. turn off the unit.
2. Keep the fridge door shut.
3. open the freezer door and put all the frozen food into an insulated freezer bag. (the kind that zips shut ... the kind that you use to bring food back from the grocery store.)

4. Place a thin flexible cutting board on the bottom of the freezer. (The ones you can trim with a scissors to get it just the right size.) Wait about an hour or just use a blower dryer to GENTLY defrost the interior.

5. Place a couple of paper towels on top of the thin flexible cutting board.

6. You can use a plastic pancake turner to easily get behind the sheets of ice and GENTLY pry them away from the sides of the freezer... let them fall on the paper towels and cutting board... you can lift them out as needed.

7. You can actually leave the thin cutting board inside the bottom of the freezer... once you get everything dried with towels.

8. Turn on the unit... wait another hour... make sure it's getting cold. Then put all your frozen food back.

Hint: I keep a few frozen gel packs in my freezer all the time. I use them to put into the insulated freezer bag when I go shopping. I use them when someone needs cold applied to injuries. I use them to keep my frozen food cold while I'm defrosting the freezer.

another Hint: Get a couple indoor/outdoor wireless thermometers to know the inside temps of the freezer and fridge without opening the door.

Freezer and food section are 2 separate components of fridge.
Freezer temp has nothing to do with food section temp.

Freezer has it's own evaporator section and food section has it's own.

Fridge thermostat controls temp based on food section temp sensing via thermistor

OP.....
If food section is very cold (close to freezing items) then turn temp set point down.
Most RV fridges do not have defrost cycles
If freezer has ice build up........check door seals for leakage.

Otherwise.if temps good...then defrost as needed.

When I had my Norcold, in high humidity I had to defrost every couple weeks. I removed everything from the freezer, then used a turkey baster to spray the ice with hot water. Used rags to remove the water, then repeated until I was able to get all the ice out. Once all the ice was removed, I dried the freezer and put everything back in.

The fridge companies, Dometic and Norcold specifically say not to use sharp objects and/or heat guns/hair dryers as they could possibly damage the plastic used inside the box....good luck/...Dennis
