Help! Awning Will Not Fully Close

My awning will not fully close at the forward support but closes fine at the rear support. It was not left open in the wind so not sure what caused this problem. I thought maybe it shifted on the track was no longer square but everything looks fine to me on the trailer and awning side. I'd like to be able to fix it myself, it is still under warranty but I do not want to drag it the dealer.

Thanks!

One thing that can cause that is rolling it up with the pull strap off center.
I marked the center point on the roller and make sure the strap in the middle when I put it up.

x2 - my dealer had demonstrated it to me with the strap off-center. First trip out, ours did the same thing and continued for several months. It gave me absolute fits - I finally centered the strap as a last resort and have never had a failed "rollup" since - and we use ours a quite a bit as we spend 4-5+ months a year on the road.

I don't disagree, at least with the manual Dometic awning. But I never had to worry about it being centered when I had the Carefree of Colorado awning. Not to mention that the dealers tell people to move the strap to a different place every time you roll it up to prevent permanent deformation of the vinyl.

Open awning then check that awning material has not shifted on the ROLLER

The material is secured by screws in track on side of rig but not on roller.
Measure from edge of awning material to roller arms...then holding on to material push the roller/arm to center material on awning (equal distance on each end)

Interesting thought. I'll have to check that on mine.

Mine shifted routinely until a installed a short pan head sheet metal screw in roller grove on each side of awning material (just like top track)to stop awning material from moving in roller grove.
No more shifting, no more arms not lining up....simple fix.

  • You might try fully unrolling it - move the roll strap so it's centered and then roll it back up.
  • Yes, it is a Dometic awning but not one that is affected by the recall. I did check the awning track and there is a screw at each end to secure the awning and it does not appear to have shifted.
  • This might help.help. Seems like measuring everything might help to determine whether it's an alignment issue or whether canvas/awning has stretched.
  • Mine does this. What I'm finding is that when I roll it up I need to hold the strap down with with my foot, but more toward the left side. It seems to me that it provides more resistance and the right side rolls just a hair earlier. The more we use the awning and close it like this, its getting better.

I'm curious, is this a Dometic awning? Our old trailer had a Care of Colorado awning and it performed flawlessly for 10 years. Not so much with our brand new Dometic awning.
  • Mine did the same thing on my sold unit.

The awning was not rolling up squarely. It had shifted only about 1/4" in the track. I never could get it to stay put. I just had to let it up somewhat more abruptly to get the arms to close.

Since you still have warranty, I would let the dealer handle it.

    Good Luck
