Commercial registration on New Truck Questions

Picked up our new truck last week and found out due to the 14000 gvwr in our state, CT, I had to get commercial plates or register the truck at the 12500 limit of combination plates and probably be over the registered weight. So I went with the commercial plates to be legal at my gvwr and had a few questions , I know most states differ in the laws but if your carrying a TC and have the commercial plates are you required to stop at the scales when traveling? here in Ct the scales are closed most of the time and the truck is a pickup with a pickup bed and used for recreational use only? also using it for the TC do I need to change my insurance to commercial insurance even if used for the TC ? I didn't want to call the insurance company until I did some research first.
Thanks
Mike

  • Thanks for the help still not sure if I need to notify the insurance company about the commercial plates but also would not want to learn later that they would not cover something ,
    thanks Mike

How much commercial stickers in CT cost?
In CA 15k sticker adds about $400 to annual registration.
I had one of insurance carrier refuse to insure my F250 as they don't do commercials.
If you really want to use truck commercially, the good insurance premium will be in $2000 range.

That's the point the truck will not be used commercially just plated that way and used just for the TC ,in ct the cost goes by gvwr and I think for a 14K vehicle it is 180 a year , this happen at the dealer the day I picked up the truck so I had no time to research the difference in cost between combination and commercial plates just went with what would keep me legal at the full 14K gvwr.
  • I have a friend, who bought for his construction business a vintage crane mounted on 30,000lb chassis.
One time he drove the crane with over 10,000lb pump on the flatbed behind the crane and drove by CA weight station.
CHP 2 officers chased him, pulled over and check that he also does not have CDL.
After scratching the heads - they let him go.
We do have some LEO on forum, so one might chime-in, but my take is that CHP should arrest the guy and impound the crane.
But I can imagine how much trouble the procedure would trigger, so they went the easy way.
    We all are only humans.
One more time - pickup in CA is truck below 13,xxxlb GVW
  • If you want to spend a lot of time you may be able to get the DMV to reconsider your truck as an RV instead of commercial vehicle. It will take a lot of convincing and you must document the camper will always be on the truck while driven on city, county or state maintained roads.

In California I was able to have my 3500 registered at a non-commercial rate because I had a cap (campershell) bolted to the bed rails.

With my current C4500 Kodiak Monroe Pickup I do not have to stop at scales when towing my 5th wheel. The signs before the scales show No Pickups. My truck has a pickup bed so it looks like an oversized pickup...I haven't been stopped yet towing or empty in 10 years throughout the state.

  • We have been commercially registered in Ct since 2011. Never stopped at weigh stations or notified insurance company. I don't think the truck squad is too concerned with RV's,but the state likes the increased annual registration fee.

  • Nevada doesn't have commercial plates for pickup at all.
I used to drive F450 commercially and the DOT laws are so murky that ask 3 DOT officers about non-common issue and they will give you 3 different answers.
Back in California I was passing "no pickups" weight stations with my 15,000 GVW pickup. One time out of curiosity I went to station office and ask about pickup definition. None of the officers would know that from top of their head and it turned out to be odd number in 13k range.
My advise for your case is call DOT headquarters in your state directly, or be ready for maze of answers.
  • Here in NY I have commercial plates but personal vehicle insurance. I have never stopped at the DOT scales, I don’t think that they want to waste their time with RV’rs.
  • Throughout the mid-west ... Ohio, Indiana, Illinois ... the interstate weight scales usually post "commercial trucks over XXX pounds" A pick-up with a camper, no matter how it's titled and licensed, would never go through the scales.
  • I don't have any experience to base my answer off of but I suspect that if you pulled into the scales (should they be open) you wouldn't be greated with a smile. Best way to get an answer is to contact your local highway patrol and ask them specifically what you are required to do. Have them cite any applicable codes as well and write down the name / badge of the officer providing the information so you can reference it should another officer question you.

As for insurance, your insurance company is the best answer for this question as they are the ones underwriting your rig. Be specific about what you have and document, document, document their answers. Even see if they will submit something in writing stating they know exactly what you have and that it complies with the policy you purchased. Nothing worse than paying insurance money on a rig only to find out the policy is no good because they found a loophole in their 50 page contract...
