They better danged well be considering some kind of upgrade to more gears or the market is going to pass them by.
While I agree that they need to update and get more gears, they did do better than the GM on the Ike.
So with 4 extra gears why didn’t the GM smoke the RAM??? - 2001400exExplorer

Super slow 0-60.
You obviously don't have a 4:10 behind it.
In this test it was 3:42. Other tests I've seen are similar. Regardless of gear ratio, everyone says it drives like a semi unloaded. But drives great loaded.

IMO it did a lot for the Ford. More OD means trucks can have lower gearing for pulling and higher gearing overall for empty running. Fords OD is arguabley a tripple OD and gets the RPM crazy low when empty. I have 6 gears and it would be awesome to have a couple more gears for empty freeway travel. It has the torque but not the gears. I can easily see how beneficial it would be to have even one more gear.
x2.
Like my 1750 RPMs in 6th at 80 MPH! Yet because of the Aisin's low first and second gear it handles 24,500 combined just fine. And can get 20 MPG on the freeway bobtail.
Yes, but I really like my exhaust brake that works down to 800 RPM in any gear.... ;) - Me_AgainExplorer III

Everything I've read. The Aisin is great when pulling, even with the gear disadvantage. But drives like a semi when empty. Super slow 0-60. That kept me out of the RAM as I only pull heavy 4-5 times a year. They need to find a tranny that does great pulling and around town as a lot more heavy duty pickups are daily driven than ever before.
Gee, in 4.5 years I have not found that to be true with my Aisin equip'd truck. One has to remember it is a 8,000+ truck(385/865 in my case) with torque management and not going to drive like a jackrabbit. For throttle floppers they will find the "dead pedal" issue, for those that learn to roll into the throttle they drive just fine. - 2001400exExplorerEverything I've read. It's not pulling hills that the extra gears help, it's cruising unloaded on the freeway where the extra gears result in lower RPM's.
More gears allows you to find one that allows the engine to operate at WOT with out over reving or lugging.
Wilber1, I agree 100%, our 2001 Ram 2500 had the NV4500 5 speed with 3.55’s. There was a big jump between 3rd and 4th, climbing a grade if I got slowed to the point I needed to drop to 3rd, I could take to red line, then in 4th it would drop to about 1,500 rpm and would lug. I was stuck until the hill flattened a bit so I could overcome the low rpm. - wilber1Explorer
