best route near Great Basin Natl. Park

We will be heading south through Ely around the middle of October with our signature MH and trailer(65')length.

My question is...should we stay on Hwy 50 all the way to I-15 and forget about going into the GB park, or is Hwy 487 to 21 over to I-15 a good enough road for our set-up(steep hills/high elevation)and go into the GB park on our way through that area?

Will I need to be concerned about snowfall in that area in mid October?

Thank-you in advance for any information on this...Don
  • Thank-you for the campsite recommendations and other information about the roads and things to see in the park. We are looking forward to checking out this National Park...Don
  • it is well worth the time for a visit. the border casino has a rv park with full hook ups right on 50 just a short distance from the park.
  • Thank-you for the replies about GB Park. I'm glad to know that 487/21 is a good road for my 65' combination. I didn't want to encounter a bunch of sharp curves and steep elevation changes.

You guys have me convinced that GB park is worth the time to check out and explore. I did look at their website and the caves sound very interesting and something that we would want to see.

Thanks for letting me know that it is well worth going that route as we head towards Bryce Canyon park...Don
  • I only know one couple who've been there - and they say it is a must see destination. It is just so far off the normal national park trail that few make the side trip over to the park.

We intend to be there in early November, because that's how our schedule looks to work out. Hope the snow doesn't stop our visit. Even though it will likely be in the 20s at night - everything I've read / heard says it should be a great visit.
  • Great Basin Nat'l Park is too good to pass up. I would guess it's one of the least visited parks because not many travel Hwy 50, Nevada (except those that know good drives). :) Definitely do the Lehman Cave tour. Hwy 487/21 is a good road to get to I-15.

For the park, we stay at this awesome little BLM recreation area - good for big rigs - about 30 min to the national park.

We turned off 50 down to GB and back up to 50 three years ago with no problem. We unhitched our toad at the visitor center, drove the Wheeler Peak Scenic loop including a short hike on one of the trails on top in it, and then re-hooked up before continuing our trip to Delta. We had no trouble with 487 and 488 to the park and just retraced back to 50.

Thank-you for the information about GB. That brings up another question. Is GB park worth taking the time to see and do some exploring at? I don't hear of very many people going there, but since it is a National Park, I figured it must have some interesting things to see. Thanks again for any info or highlights you have about the park.
