Monterey, Ca fairgrounds

Looks like an okay RV park. Any first hand info on this location, last price I had was %50.00 a night. Be there middle of Sept. Couple nights.
  • Head a little North to San Juan Bautista, Betabel RV Resort, better price, and very nice. Unless you want to be in the city. Marina Dunes, is another option. Never stayed at the fairgrounds RV park
  • I stayed at the fairgrounds a few years ago. Basically it's a parking lot with some of the sites shaded by large oak trees,. There is good security; the gate's locked at night, but they give you a code so you can go in and out. The camp hosts were very nice and pleasant. The location can't be beat. It's so close to everything you would want to see in Monterey and Carmel. The airport is close so there is some noise during the day. My only complaint was the ten million watt overhead lights - you could read a newspaper inside with the blinds closed - I put black trash bags over the windows in the bedroom.

Sounds like the OP wants to stay in Monterey. Betabel is 30 miles from Monterey and it's not an easy 30 miles thanks to all the road construction there.

Do not go to Betabel if your interest is the Monterey or Carmel area. Marina Dunes is good, but it's close to $100 a night too.

I've never stayed there, but I've drive by it. It is just a parking lot with hookups, but it is a good location for seeing Monterey. The Monterey Peninsula is a very RV unfriendly area. There are really very few RV parks and the private ones are very expensive. There is a County RV park at the Laguna Seca Racetrack that is nice and is more of a regular RV park versus a parking lot and it's reasonably priced too. It's just a few extra miles out of town from the fairgrounds. You would want to check and make sure there isn't a race going on or you probably wouldn't get an RV site anyway.

I don't live far from Monterey so we often go for the weekend. Don't tell anybody, but we stay for free when we go. I know of a nice quiet level street with parking next to a hotel so we always just overnight there on the street. Then I get up at about 6:30am and drive the motorhome down to one of the turnouts along Ocean View Blvd in Pacific Grove. There is no time limit on the parking there and you just have to be out by 11pm. At 6:30am none of the tourists are down there yet so you can find nice places right along the beach to put the slides out and stay right there all day. Then after dark we move back up to our street parking area.
  • Stayed there 2 years ago. As mentioned, asphalt parking lot, the sites can be tight (width wise). The location is great. Heads up on one item, the hookups are common, two sites share the hookups. Have extra lengths of sewer and electrical in case you are assigned to a site where hookups are on the right side of your RV. As I recall hookups are located to the rear of the sites. Since my electric is in the rear I had no problem. Hose, and sewer routed under the rig. Enjoy Monterey.
