Spare Tire mtg on Cedar Creek 5th wheel

Looked at my spare tire mount and it sure doesn't look very strong to me. It's under the rear of the camper but the cable extend and retract mechanism looks like it uses two (2) 3/8 sheet metal screws to hold it to the floor of the camper. There is a channel there that I'm thinking about running a cable through there and through the spare just in case. Anybody else ever felt squeamish about the way their spare was mounted?
  • Honestly never looked at it and have not thought too much about it. There has not been any signs of loosening or change in height and we have been over to rough roads.

Hmm well maybe I should look at it after the winter now... :?
  • Mine was on a flimsy bracket on the rear bumper and I never trusted that! I ordered the new BAL sliding under belly mount and it is a real nice piece. Mounts easy and it slides the spare out so you don't have to lay in the dirt to get it out from under the camper. Here the link, called BAL Hide-a-spare

  • I am about to order the BAL Hide A Spare also, probably in the spring. Too cold to lay on the ground right now to install, I should have done that a couple of months ago but being the great procrastinator I am I kept putting it off, but I really want one. :)
Glad to hear OURPLACE likes his, that is good to know.
  • I had a similar setup on my Everest FW and I noticed one of the bolts had sheered off when I went to replace the spare recently. They aren't even hardened. I now carry the spare in the bed of the pickup until I can find a replacement hanger.
  • I ran a cable from the frame, around the rim also. When the tire comes down do not unwind the cable any more that you have to, the cable will start to bind up. You will then have a hard time getting it to go back up again.
