Brake light has been on for a couple of years and stayed on after replacing all brakes but it stops great and stayed still when parked both when in park with the yellow parking break on and off.

We all have plenty of ideas, but the autopark guru himself, in the form of the oldusedbear has now responded, so let the game begin, that deals with what will hopefully become a complete and thorough education on your part and whether or not, you do you own work or not. Or not, even more so, as you now have to tell most of these pros what and how it needs fixing.

On my 1986 Chevy p30 on the front, is a reservoir for trans fluid. This has a hose running to the power steering pump, mounted on the drivers side of the motor, that feeds the hydrovac and the power steering. If left empty for a extended period of time, you will hear a gear wine coming from the pump, and have no power breaks or power steering. You will still be able to stop and steer, but you will have the legs and arms off a body builder.

Ken if that tank was empty your green pressure is probably leaking and needs to be replaced. Remove the back plate that covers the hyd system and you can see in there with a flash light to see what is leaking. You can get a P 30 chassis manual on line that will describe the system . The brake shoes adjust like a drum brake on a car except the adjusting hole is on the top part of the drum instead of the bottom. I can't remember wether you pry up on the star wheel or down. I have it written down but am away from the MH. It is not that difficult. Good Luck.

Thanks all! First thing first, there is a reservoir up under there calling for transmission fluid. I don't think it is for the transmission but maybe for the hydraulic that work with the electronics for the autopark. Anway, it was empty. Filled it and now I can see and hear the cable moving but still won't hold the camper. Going to try adjusting this week and will pass along whatever I find. Thanks again all for the help. Where would I go about getting a manual for this part of my camper? 98 Allegro

There is two adjustments.
One for the cable and one for the brakes shoes. My opening for the shoes is awkward to get to as it is on the top of the small brake drum on transmission. cable adjustment is near the front of the transmission on a bracket.
I had my shop do both adjustments to get it to hold. They said main issue was a stretched cable.

Parking bake is on the back of the transmission
Not the wheels
This is what needs adjusting or replacing
Do you have manual control for the parking bake?
GM had a "auto park" system that was problematic

I can be a smart a## at times and a know it all at others but not in this case. How does the shift lever activate the drum brake? I really would like to know.

Dave the auto park system has a hydraulic unit with a electrical control system,cable and large spring and a pressure switch. When you are in drive the hydraulic system keeps the shoes expanded off of the drum when you put it in park the switch releases the hydraulic pressure and the spring and the cable pulls the shoes against the drum to prevent the MH from rolling. On lighter vehicles a parking pawl in the transmission will work fine but on a MH that weights over 15,000 lbs it would damage the transmission.

chevy P30 and some other chassis use a brake drum around the drive shaft with brake shoes for parking and emergency brake commonly called the auto park systems There are many post and a few experts on this site has nothing to do with a Park Pawl in transmission on this chassis there is not one. Search AutoPark There is help out there.

Mine would roll forward and backwards when I first bought it. The brake shoes can be adjusted like any other drum brake. There is a star wheel inside the drum on the end of the transmission and a slot to get to the star wheel on top of the drum, you can tighten this wheel with a large flat bladed screw driver or a brake adjusting tool. Rear wheel need to be off the ground so you need to chock the front wheels so the MH does not roll while adjusting brakes. Read some of Oldusedbears posts to understand how the system works. I have adjusted mine twice over the years.
