Tie downs?

Can someone explain why I see some trucks with tie downs mounted directly to the frame and others to the bumper and behind the cab? I'm not sure if it is just preference or the what kind of camper/ truck dictates.

Thanks
  • Torklift mount to the frame under the bed.
Happijack mount to the bumper and behind the cab. The attachment points behind the cab are bolted thru the bed to a bar which is bolted to the frame.
They are 2 different companies with 2 different approaches. I used Happijacks with a 4,000 pound 11' camper for 3 years and had no problems.
Lance used to recommend Happijack for their campers but I think they quit doing that.
    It's basically just personal preference.
  • I prefer the way Torklifts mount directly to the frame of the truck. I've been using them since 2009 and couldn't be more pleased. I don't like the idea of mounting to the truck bed or bumper. An added benefit of Torklift is having an outstanding company with excellent customer service standing behind the product.
  • To add...I used some pocket mounts for mu last TC and never had an issue. The RV shop told me they wouldn't worry about them as I had a old '95 F350 and the bed were thick and strong. My new(er) truck has Torklift frame mounts and I wouldn't have it any other way.
  • Thanks for all the replies I am in Japan and my only resource is the internet. I transfer back to the states in a couple weeks and pick up the camper I ordered. When I ordered it I asked for Torklift fast guns and that is what is on the camper build sheet, so I can safely assume I will have a frame mount.

The Torklift fast guns are not the same thing as the Torklift frame mounts. My point being, if the build sheet does not specify Torklift Tie Downs, you might only be getting the Tie-Downs.

  • He means; "if your build sheet only shows tie downs, you will have tie downs, but not frame mounts, which are installed on the truck you will use to carry your camper.
  • And he means (:)): The Fastguns are the turnbuckle type devices that connect the camper to the tie downs. The Tie Downs bolted to the truck are a separate item. You can use the Torklift Fastguns with either Torklift or Happijac tie downs. The Fastguns are ordered by length, depending on the camper, truck, and tie downs. The tie downs will be specific to the model and year of truck.

    Ditto.

As flimsy (light weight) as truck bumpers are these days, I'd never consider it as an appropriate mounting mount for a camper tie-down. I see truck going down the road, and the bumper has a "twist" in it from using it as a tie-down point for a camper.

I agree I want the frame mounted Torklift, but to complicate things I have wheel to wheel side steps. Torklift makes tie downs that will work with side steps, but I will loose 2" of clearance
