- Bob806Explorer IIIWe're heading to Caprock this fall,on our way to the Davis Mountains. I'm really looking forward to it. We had a 4 night stay a couple years ago in the Mesquite CG at Palo Duro and loved it; other campers told us to check out Caprock, less busy and great star gazing at night.
- huachucaExplorerWe often stay at Palo Duro Canyon SP when passing through on I-40. Panhandle-Plains museum in nearby Canyon is worth a visit.
The Dog Canyon campground in Guadalupe Mtn NP is a no-frills spot but you'll likely have the place to yourself. Its in a beautiful little box canyon with the ranger's residence being at the entrance so security is not a problem. The more heavily visited Pine Canyon campground is a parking lot - not recommended. - accsysExplorer

Thanks for the tip about the texas pass but we will only be staying a couple/3 nights in texas on our way through.
Caprock is $4/adult per day entrance fee so if there is just the two of you for three days, that will be a 24 entry fee. The pass is $70 and it gives you 1/2 price camping fee on your second night (can be used three times). At Caprock that would save you an additional 8.50 -11.00 depending on a 30 or 50 amp site. That still wouldn't be good enough to offset its cost if you are just staying in a Texas park for the three days for the next year. However if there is a chance you would be at another park or two in the next year, the pass is the way to go. All it takes is one more similar stay and you have paid for the pass. At Palo Duro you would save the $5/adult per day entry fee. We usually stay at both when we pass through.
If your old enough to know who he was, there is a Bob Wills Museum in Turkey, TX just east of Caprock that is pretty good and inexpensive. - sonbeauExplorerThanks for the tip about the texas pass but we will only be staying a couple/3 nights in texas on our way through.
- PawPaw_n_GramExplorerWe think Caprock is tied with Inks Lake and Davis Mountains as the best state park in Texas.
Pali Duro is very good, but we prefer the quiet of Caprock. Campground isn’t as large or busy as any of the three in Palo Duro.
Lake Arrowhead - we’ve been there for day use, never camped there. Seems a bit barren to us and too open for the winds which tend to blow across north Texas.
I assume you know about the daily access fees at Texas State Parks. If you are going to be at Texas State Parks for 8 to 10 nights, purchasing a yearly access pass is cheaper than paying the daily fee.
That daily fee is in addition to the campground fee at almost all Texas State Parks. - agesilausExplorer IIINot much further is Palo Duro which is the premier Texas SP (IMO) in that area of TX, lots pf pull thru sites there. We have been thru Caprock but we camped at Copper Breaks. Caprock looked to be better. Copper Break cg was a bare ground cg on a lake. But it's a barren lake. till not bad tho. There isn't much to be found off US 287, not even many commercial cg so your choices are limited.
One thing about Caprock, you cannot drive all the way in with a long vehicle, your Class A or a truck towing for example. The CG is accessible tho.
