- Roy_LynneExplorer IIYEah I'm for tossing as it would probably cost more to fix than a brand new one. Sorry you had that experience as I often tell folks to go to flea markets to find them.

That's a good point. It might cost as much or more to have it welded right. - Ole_Man_DanExplorerI have one with a crack...
I had a friend who is an artist paint a scene on the bottom,
It hangs in my Dining room.
(Its too easy to buy and season another one) - 69_AvionExplorerI have welded a cast iron engine block back together. Cast iron needs to be pre-heated a d stress relieved while cooling it slowly. You need to use the proper nickel alloy rod in order to be successful.
As far as quality cast iron companies go, I like Lodge the best. It is probably cheaper to replace it than weld it. - Quality_JohnsonExplorerA welding shop could do a fine job repairing that crack. I weld at home, but I'm not sure I'd try to weld cast iron, especially if it was valuable to me. That said, there is a lot to the theory of "If it works, use it!"
- rbrandExplorerIt can be welded but you have to heat the cast iron up until it is red hot before you weld.

Lodge Cast Iron
Yup good cast iron is still available from Lodge and I've not seen any difference between the old and the new except for the weight. That weight difference isn't a bad thing and it's sometimes an advantage. I have a Lodge and a Wagner chicken fryer, 3" deep 10 1/4" skillets, and I Think the Lodge is ever so slightly better in holding the heat with a lot of oil and chicken in it. - notruffinitExplorerAbout 25 years ago I bought a cracked skillet for a buck at Kmart. Been using it ever since. If it doesn't leak put it to work.
- WoodGlueExplorerX2 on the safe to use.
If it doesn't leak, you're good to go.
One of my best seasoned cast irons has a crack in it and it's still is good to use.
