Camping at Kings Canyon & Yosemite around new years?

I've not been to this area since I was around 9 years old, My dad use to take us way back then.

Anyways I'm wondering about weather conditions & what parts of the parks would be open to us with our dog?

I really wanted to go out of state & might still jump over to Nevada for one night so I can put my Nevada sticker on our map.

But the original plan got ruined by family events & then my plan B would ad about 500 - 600 more miles to my trip than if I just stay in Ca. & go to Yosemite & I'm thinking due to our time frame I'm thinking I'd prefer to relax more than have to race around to try & see everything & then race back home.

& The Wife has never been to Yosemite or Kings Canyon.

Dogs are not allowed on any trails & I was told dog are only allowed in the camp ground & inside the car & no where else!

    So I won't be visiting there. :(

That's interesting, we have been to Kings Canyon several times and have always taken our dog. See lots of dogs in the campgrounds.

They are not allowed on the trails and you will find that most State and National Parks will not allow dogs on the trails.

Kings Canyon is one of my favorite places.

So tell me what you can do while there with your dog?
I don't know if it's the time of year I'm going but the guy was very clear, the Only place dogs are allowed are in the camp grounds & in yOur car period!

We are older and don't do a lot of hiking, if we do we are gone for maybe an hour or two and the dog usually stays in the car. (we usually go in the spring so the weather is cool.).

As far as things to do with the dog, the campgrounds have lots of open space and roads and we walk several times a day just within the campground.

Most of Kings Canyon will probably be closed to traffic in the winter. We usually go over Memorial Weekend and some of the campgrounds are just starting to open up.

This is a picture of the road coming out of the Canyon in 2011 Memorial weekend, got out just before they required chains.

I'm assuming this is in Kings Canyon?

& If so I find it strange that this guy was so set on what he told me?
Might these parts be at parts of the park that will be closed this time of year?

No, it isn't, but like Forest River above me notes, National Parks tend to have very strict rules about dogs on trails, limiting them to very specific areas if they're even allowed at all (usually only allowed in campgrounds). If you are looking for places where you can take your dog(s) and take them out and about, you will have better luck with national forests, state forests and state parks.

I was trying to give you some ideas of things that you could do.

As far as Sequoia and Kings Canyon, yes, at New Years you might find a significant portion of the park unaccessible due to snowfall. You would need to have chains and cold weather and snow gear.

If Nevada is still on your mind, maybe something like Washoe Lake State Park would interest you, campground is open year round, no hookups though, or futher south Big Bend of the Colorado

Again, just giving you some options.
  • A little FYI …

Kings Canyon and Yosemite are both National Parks. And I believe that almost all National Parks have a "no dogs on trails" rule. That said, there are still many places you can visit within both parks with your dog. But if you're thinking on going to Kings Canyon around New Years, you'd better have chains for your car/rig and LOTS of warm clothes. Same thing for Yosemite. It'll be beautiful, but pretty nippy!

    Dog friendly California state parks

    Example

    Samuel P. Taylor State Park

This lush redwood retreat 15 miles west of San Rafael has dog-friendly picnic areas, campgrounds with showers and the five-mile Cross Marin Trail, shared with cyclists, that visitors with leashed dogs are welcome to enjoy. For DogTrekkers who like to camp, there’s a bigger attraction: Samuel P. Taylor makes an ideal, low-cost base camp for forays into the adjacent Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate Recreation Area, both of which hold many options for hikers and sightseers with leashed canine companions.

  • It could be sunny and 80 degrees or snowing and below freezing or anything in between in Yosemite Valley. Kings Canyon may be OK but snow or storms are always a possibility that time of year.

Before December and after April are the best months to go for good weather.
