Turn OFF automatic updates if you have metered internet "mifi". - MrWizardModeratorWith win 7
You can set updates to notify but not download
You can then download at time and place of your choosing - path1Explorer

Op has win 7 home edition. I have no idea about updates (maybe once a month) until I get ready to turn off computer. Then when I shut off updates are either downloaded or put into right places, as maybe they have already been downloaded? At home with unlimited usage, no problem. When traveling I use Verizon jet pack with limited usage. 10 or 14 MB per month. - Chuck_thehammerExplorerthe last mifi update took 2 minutes.
Windows and GPS map updates wait till have time to go to the public library.
I ask first. as they open in the A.M. most times they say OK... not busy.
map is 6gb.. so 1 hour. windows not to long. I catch up on some reading. - MrWizardModeratorI assume the OP talking about Windows updates

Generally if Windows tells you that Updates need to be installed at shutdown, the updates have already been downloaded. You no longer need your internet connection. So you can turn off the Jetpack.
What sch911 says is true - if you're being notified that the updates are ready to install, they have already been downloaded. With Windows 10, you can designate your MiFi/hot-spot connection as "metered." This way, Windows 10 won't automatically download updates. We do that and wait until we're in a free wi-fi location to do all updates.

Those Jetpack and sierra modules are the only thing we have in rural areas for internet service. We don't have that hard wire to our house like those hard wired telephones or hard wired internet connections. We figure we are lucky to have natural gas and electricity. :B - donn0128Explorer IIYou can hard wire the jet pack to your home Internet for updates. Otherwise it ducks data off the air.

Those updates can really eat into your data plan. I would not do them unless or until I could get home.
Question - If the Jet Pack works on the cell system, why would waiting until arriving home prevent data usage? At home, if the Jet Pack is working from cellular, it's not going to access your WiFi to save data is it? We purchased a Jet Pack a while back, but I've never thought about this.
As for the updates when you want to go to sleep, turn it off, it will update the next time you use it.
