No Brakes

I have a 2008 Jayco f322 and I cannot get power to the brakes, I have a Tekonsha P3 brake controller and it shows over 3 amps going when you press the brakes, all the lighting works including the brake lights ok , when some one presses the brakes there is no sound at the wheel, have checked them all for that, any one have any ideas

  • If you could free spin the wheel......need to adjust the brakes before you do anything else.

Brakes should be adjusted until you can NOT turn wheel then back off the adjustment until you feel a slight drag

After adjusting the brakes you can then set up the controller.

I am getting voltage to the wheel, I bought new tires so when breaking the lug nuts I missed one and had it jacked,so thought put on the brakes so can break the nut lose, but I could spin the wheel, checked the next wheel same way , they should have locked I would have thought, brakes in truck was on and I was plugged in, am I right???

No they should not have locked. They do not work like your truck brakes. They are enertia brakes. Meaning they only work when moving. Your brake controller "Feels" how hard the TV is slowing down, and activates the trailer brakes to match. IF the TV is sitting still. The Brake controller feels nothing, and does not activate the trailer brakes.

To truly check your trailer brakes. Start down the road, and when you get to 25 MPH. Activate the trailer brakes with the MANUAL lever on the controller. Do NOT press the TV brake pedal. IF you feel the brakes come on they are working. Then you can adjust them to the correct setting. See your owner's guide to find out how.

BTW. The warmer they are, the better they work.
  • So, you do have power to the brakes...
The brakes will usually not engage unless the wheels are turning. Also, the controller is proportioning the amount of power needed and sensing no inertia or movement. That is your problem. Next time, put a block of wood under the tire if you forget to break the lugs loose.

The display indicates voltage sent to the trailer brakes, not amps. I'd suggest you read through the manual and make sure all your settings are correct on the controller. There is a "troubleshoot" function with the controller also.
  • Hand held compass....hold it close to wheel (lower center) note needle position.
Have some one apply brakes......watch for needle deflection

If needle responds brake magnets are getting voltage.

How much? Have to check at each set of wires for each wheel. Rated for 3 amps for each magnet so with four wheels/brakes the controller should be putting out 10 (+) amps at full braking

Good clean tight grounds are essential

What happens when you pull the manual lever. Do the brakes come on then?

Also, as it is a enertia controller. It may not activate the brakes with the pedal, while sitting still. Unless you have the boost set high.
BTW. My brakes make no noise that I can hear while sitting still. But they do work while moving.
  • Open the junction box at the front of the trailer where the ambilical cord connects to the trailers wiring and to the breakaway switch.
Locate the blue wire. Have a helper apply brakes and check for voltage.
Check ground wire connection at the junction box and from the trailer battery to frame of tralier.
Disconnect blue wire and see if amperage goes away.
Crawl under trailer and check connections at each of the brake backing plates where wiring harness attaches to the brake magnets.
