Cooking in a convection/ microwave

Can toast be made in a convection microwave. Also why does convection cooking take more time than the few recipes I can find that use it? What am I doing wrong?

Very true if you want to get technical on every function. My point was to describe it as an electric, not a propane flame type oven.
But yes it does have a fan.

  • All a convection over is nothing but an electric oven. Wife uses it a lot. And we also use our microwave oven a lot.

Another thing that we have and my wife just loves it because of the speed, an that is Induction stove. Only thing is that you have to use skillets, and pots made out of stainless steel or cast iron. Manufactures like Wolfgang Puck make all those posts and skillets for Induction stoves. But these are three times faster then thermal conduction from a flame. It uses electomagnetic induction.
  • I think in the small RV convections, they may not be as fast. We use the convection all the time in ours. If I let it preheat it takes almost 30 minutes, so I never preheat. I'll throw two large pieces of chicken on the metal rack at 375 for 40 minutes and they come out perfectly.

Here's a little secret. We bought a pair of those black BBQ mats that you cook your food on when BBQing. They sell them everywhere now, including Bed, Bath and Beyond. I took one and cut it down so that it was about a 1/2" larger in diameter than the round rack in our convection oven. When I cook steak, chicken, pork chops, etc, in the convection oven I put the meat on the mat atop the rack. The juices don't drip off and saturate the meat. I use the mats on my home BBQ and home convection. Give it a try, you'd be amazed.
  • I always thought convection was supposed to be faster but I, too, have found it is about the same. May be cause the ovens are lower wattage than home convection ovens. Not sure.
  • Toast, use wire rack, 350 for 7 minutes. I do not preheat. Adjust time based on how toasty you want it.

I find cooking times are about the same.
  • In mine, if I preheat, like a home oven, cooking takes less time. If I stick stuff in there without preheating, then yes, it takes longer.

I make toast in mine. Use the wire rack, just like using an oven...
  • You can probably get an instruction manual on line. I also think it takes a little longer on convection mode. Ex: a can of biscuits says 8 - 10 minutes in regular oven, but in our convection/microwave it takes about 15 minutes.
  • Did you get a instruction book with your unit? If not I would contact the manufacture and try to get an instruction book. Ours came with an instruction book from Sharp.
