What is used to measure temp of tires?

We're going to be doing some traveling this summer and I have been reading here that some of you keep track of your tire temperature as well as pressure to hopefully avoid blow outs.

I would prefer to avoid a blowout. So what kind of tool do you use to monitor the tire temp?

There are two tools you can use to monitor tire temp.

Parked, the Infra Red pyrometer gun someone above linked to is a very good device, i have and use one, Like it too.

IN-Motion.. One of the competing Pressure Pro systems actually has temp monitoring as one of it's functions.. If you get that one put the monitor (Receiver) on your CO-Pilot's dash so he/she can take notes for you..

NOTE TO PRESSURE PRO: If you are reading this what is needed is a program (Driver) and interface package so you can run a program such as Microsoft Streets and Trips with GPS to record your travels, and have the program log time, temps (including an ambient air temp sensor) and GPS location (All 3 Lat/Long & Altitude) every so many minutes .. Would make for some interesting analysis.

That's not what a blowout is. You had a gash in the sidewall that caused your tire to go flat over a period of time. That's a flat tire. A blowout is when the tire rips open and goes flat instantly. It can happen for various reasons.

Yes a TPMS will alert you to a possible blowout situation. However, if you hit something on the road that causes the blowout, the TPMS isn't going to help you in that situation. It will let you know the tire is flat after the fact, but it won't alert you of an impending problem.

And some folks have reported a complete tread loss with no drop in air pressure or a warning from their TPMS that the tread was gone.

Very interesting Statement.......Some have lost tread.....WITH NO DROP IN AIR PRESSURE...and No warning ..the tread was gone.....

.. Why Would It Alert??????.....

So, you think it needs to be a T.P.M.S........,L.T.A.S.(..Lost Tread Alert System)

Funny, since it sounds like You SAW IT .........from your Description...WHY DIDNT You help me Change the Tire...:S

It was a SIDEWALL FAILURE..... Which BLEW OUT the Tire........

HOW IT GOT that way,is Immiterial.....:h

In actuallity, the BLOWOUT was bigger than an INCH..... but I did not measure it........:S

It WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE of the Tire...Which Blew out a HOLE IN THE SIDEWALL....... and My T.P.M.S....... alerted me,so I could pull over, and Prevent Further Damage,to the coach,rim...etc....

Even if the WHOLE SIDE OF the tire BLEW OFF... the T.P.M.S...... will alert you INSTANTLY....OF loss of air......

If you are driving along, and the Rear Passenger side tire " Blows Out"..... are you saying you Will Guarenteed Know INSTANTLY?????????.....Without a T.P.M.S.???????????
Sorry, I dont buy that.!!!!!!!

Sounds like you are contesting the " Manner in which the Incident Occured"....When the important thing is......The Incident Did occur, and I had no Further Damage.....!!!!!!!

I will try to look up my Picture I took,on the side of the road, and you can Tell me, by a Picture...Just what happenedi.....over the internet for me.:S

But if you only have so much money, I think it is better to invest your money into good tires, and an infrared temp gage. I don't like the hand method. Because it is normal to feel a temp difference from the shady side to the sunny side. And when walking around the trailer to get to the other side, I lose the temp feeling in my hand. So the hand method is unreliable. The infrared is discriminate and reliable.

You hit the nail on the head. Quality tires = no tire problems. Or very few! Those are usually road hazards.

I have never had even a flat on the 4 5th wheel trailers we have owned.

When I towed for a living I hand checked my tires and used a thumper at each stop. I was looking for a tire/hub/wheel that was hotter than the others on the same side of the trailer. A hotter tire/hub/wheel can mean a issue.

Towing a tall heavy boxy trailer in strong side winds can result in a big difference in tire temps from one side of the trailer to the other.
Tire pressures on a say LT235/85-16 E at close to max loads at interstate speeds can increase in pressure from generated heat. I've seen them go from 80 psi cold set to 94 psi after a long 4-6 hour run on hot pavement in the summer.

First blowout/tire failure happened as I was merrily going down the road. Someone pulled along side of me and pointed at the tire and by the time I pulled over the rim was ruined.

Since I have had a TPMS I have had several more failures but it always let me know before I have ruined any rims. Although the TPMS alerted me after the facts as mgirado says, it warned me of the failure and allowed me to pull over sooner that I would have. Although I keep a frequent eye on the tires with my mirrors I can't look at them all the time.

If you really need to get acurrate temps, go to Summit Racing and buy a tire temp prob gauge.

Get a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). You can watch the tire pressures and temperatures while traveling. It will alarm on a low pressure or a high temperature.

True it will not prevent an instantaneous blowout. But it can definitely prevent destroying a tire that has gone low on pressure while traveling. With the alarm on low pressure you can pull off before you ruin the tire.

Many of us use the TST 507RV monitoring systems and are very happy with them. Well worth the investment.

I like it.
Isn't that what the wife is for???
Or you could fill your tires with Nitrogen...then you would never have to worry about blow-outs.

Or just get the TPMS.

If you're really worried about having a blow out; Pressure PRO will not be of any help!

Could you please expound on this????????........thats a very interesting statement to make ,as it saved me when I had a blowout.

I got an alert from my pressure pro that my tire pressure was dropping by 10 pounds in increments each time this fast leak detector....did another reading.....by the time I got pulled off to the side of the road safely.... it was at 20 pounds

I discovered a blowout in the side wall approximately an inch long... So,seeing as how I did not damage my wheel And..... I did not damaged my R.V.

Could you please explain how did that not HELP ME????????????

I had the BLOWOUT,not, someone I knew who knows someone that they know..... it happened to me.....

So gonna call that one not true.....It helped me.
