Santa Rosa NM to Carrizozo NM Hwy54

Heading to Ruidoso with 5th wheel in signature in a couple of weeks. Is 54 a reasonably good highway for towing? I realize there are not a lot of options but I have never gotten bad route advice here.

Thanks.
Greg
  • Piece of cake. I have taken it numerous times and not problems. Just watch your speed in the small towns since they are active in handing out speeding tickets. Never had a problem, but I stay close to the speed limit or below.
  • Thanks Leaddog. Exactly what I was hoping for. I'll watch the speed too.
  • Beautiful ride !! When you get south of Vaughn 54 will split from highway 60 and turn left. Easy, but if your not watching it's easy to miss.
  • Make sure you fuel before going down the road. We were traveling and on the CB a trucker with a single tank asked about fuel. Since it was later in day most of the small tows close up. Anyhow we talked till we got to the I40 area and he got off to fuel up. Its been a couple of years since we used the road but it is a good break from the interstate and keeps ya out of Abq. although almagordo can be a pain.

Going from Santa Rosa to Carrizozo and on to Ruidoso, you do not have to go through Alamogordo. Even if you stay on US-54 to US-70 you will not go through Alamogordo. It has been a couple of years since I drove NM-37 and NM-48 from Carrizozo to Ruidoso and I was not pulling the trailer. I don't remember anything other than it being a very nice scenic drive which probably means it had lots of ups and downs as it went through the Lincoln National Forest.
  • Don't go from Carrizozo to Alamogordo !!!!!! 54 to 380 east to 37 south to 48 south to downtown Ruidoso. 37 is a good road you will pull one hill out of Nogal but 100 rv's pull it every day and one pull at Angus hill a few miles before Ruidoso if a guy can't handle either one of them he needs to stay home. Plenty of diesel fuel stops between Santa Rosa and Ruidoso but you're only talking 220 miles fill it up in SR and enjoy the ride.
  • Thanks everyone. The tip on 380 to 37/48 matches what I found on Satellite images. Looks like I top off the Diesel in Vaughn and head south from there. I appreciate the insight. We've only been to Albuquerque but never farther south. Can't wait to see some new terrain. Trying some Hatch Chili enhanced food should enhance that a lot.

Since you haven't been in the area before here's some links to potential places to checkout: Valley of Fires,
Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, Smokey Bear Historic Park, Lincoln State Historic Site, and Fort Stanton.

If you do decide to go to Alamogordo, there is the New Mexico Museum of Space History, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, and White Sands National Monument.

Hope you have a Great Time!!
  • Thanks Trailer traveler. We already had most of those earmarked but Fort Stanton will be added. It looks to be worth a stop. Just wish we could have more time down there. Neither of us retired yet so we cannot take more than a week in one stretch. 3 years n counting. :)
