Is a V-8 diesel new for Cummins?
Not really, they have in the past made V8-504, V8-555, and V8-903 CDI engines. But for the past many years all their engines have been inline, and mostly 6 cylinder Bionic Man wrote:

Just curious why everyone is gushing over this truck? You already have a 1/2 ton with a proven, good powertrain, just as much (or more) payload, etc. It's the F150 with the EB 3.5. The GM trucks are similar but without the flat torque curve of a turbocharged engine.
Sure Diesel is "cool" but the additional cost for fuel, maintenance and engine premium makes little sense in the short/long run.
But it is an interesting vehicle for sure.
It's also funny how someone mentions hauling a 10k RV with an F150 that's properly equipped, the responses are "NO WAY, YOU NEED 3/4 or 1 Ton". But you can't wait to pull that with this Nissan!
People are expecting a significant MPG advantage over something like the EB. That is why there is some excitement over this.
You always go back to the additional maintenance costs (which never seem to pan out) and the engine premium (which almost always comes back at time of resale) as reasons not to buy a diesel.
I will give you a tip. There are trucks out there that DO NOT wear the blue oval that are good trucks. This may prove to be one of them.
I will give you a tip... Todays diesels (as in MY'15)do require additional maintenance costs compared to todays gas engines. This topic excludes the extra complexity of a diesel engine/fuel system/exhaust system compared to a gas engine/fuel system/exhaust system when the time comes for a repair.Cummins12V98 wrote:
Got one on pre order??????
Nope... But my SIL's father owns an older Nissan Titan and he thinks it's the cat's meow. I get an earful of it every family get together.- 45RicochetExplorer

Yes fairly new and I cringe every time I hear a "V8 Cummins" :W
Just to boot I believe it has a CP.4 HPFP :E
Good move for Nissan IMO. - BedlamModeratorI see the Nissan Cummins as strong competitor/alternative to the Ford F150HD. Toyota and GM may loose some sales to Nissan until they get a diesel on the market. I think it will take away sales mostly from the Ram EcoDiesel but will not really hurt anyone's 3/4t market.
- TurnThePageExplorerAnd speaking of the price of diesel, I just returned from Indiana, where the going price was $.40/gal CHEAPER that regular unleaded.
- IdaDExplorerI'm mildly interested in this truck. I had planned on buying a 2/3500 CTD over the winter but some unexpected family medical issues cropped up so my plans were thrown on the back burner temporarily. Now I may just wait around and see what the numbers and pricing on this truck work out to.
The challenge will be the price point, because you can get basic CTD Rams for under $40k in crew cab/4wd configurations in my area. Frankly the Titan XD would have to undercut that figure by a good margin in order to interest me, and I doubt it will. Even the heavy half F150 model prices itself out of contention against the CTD, let alone a Hemi model.
It does appear that Nissan isn't making the same mistake twice with this truck in terms of the components. I still cringe a little when I see a current model lifted Titan going down the road with that toothpick between the rear wheels... - brulazExplorerAFAIK the competition for this truck is really just the F150 3.5L EcoB with the HD Option. Probably similar payloads and tow capacities. The F150 EcoB has more HP, the TitanXD has more Torque.
Looks like the TitanXD is built a lot heavier than the F150 HD, drive train and frame. Definitely will be a heavier truck than the Al-bodied F150 and probably over 8500#, so no EPA numbers.
Titan XD could well get better mileage when highway towing, but not necessarily around town. The price of diesel becomes less of a concern when you realize that the 3.5L EcoB really prefers Premium when towing heavy. That's what I run 100% of the time on mine.
I'm eagerly awaiting the final numbers on this truck. But I'm afraid it's price will be way over a similarly equipped F150 HD with the 3.5L EcoB. On the other hand, you can't get the F150 HD in a short wheel base extended cab (which I prefer), and I do love diesel torque. Soooo ... we'll see. But if it's not less $$ than a similarly equipped F250 diesel, to hell with it. - Bionic_ManExplorer

Will they have EPA mpg numbers in that segment?
Do they show mpg for the Ram ecodiesel? I don't know...This Cummins is a "bigger" diesel than the one in the Ram.....I've not seen EPA mpg numbers on 2500's......hey, maybe they'll "ballpark' for the new Nissan 2000HD:)
So, I kind of answered the question on my own. The Ecodiesel does have an EPA MPG rating.
But, anything with a GVWR above 8500 pounds DOES NOT get tested.
IMO, they need the numbers to be able to sell. If it doesn't have an MPG advantage over something like the EcoBoost, or a 5.7 Hemi, I think they will have trouble selling.
