- deltamasterExplorerSomething seems strange about that. The website states that all you need is vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Did you attempt to get in by asking for a temporary vehicle pass?
- BombfixerExplorerLast spring I tried to make reservations at the Navy campground at Key West. I was told that
spaces were first come first serve red and that a valid DoD registration decal would be required for entry. I tried to get the registration at Redstone Arsenal which is close to where I live. No dice. They don't require registration and don't have the ability to issue one. When we got to Key West, we were told we could get a registration at Boca Chica Navy Base. When we went there, we were informed that they only issue to those with valid orders assigning personnel to NAS Key West. Long story short: no DoD Decal no admission to NAS Key West. But getting that decal is next to impossible. kinda puts us retirees out of the military installation camping in many places. - bukhrnExplorer III

That's a rather broad statement, as I can tell you for a fact, (as I am on them 3 times a week) that Ft Eustis, VA., Ft Story, VA. & Defense Supply Center in Richmond, all require them.TripleE wrote:
The AF and Army stopped requiring stickers a few years ago. In either June or July this year the Navy and Marines stopped the stickers. We are currently on Seal Beach Naval Weapons in CA and asked at the gate about stickers, they are no longer issuing them. 100% ID check.
Thats because of DBIDS, it mandatory DOD-wide end o the story.
Ft Eustis is a joint base Army/AF, & Ft Story is a joint base Army/Navy.
I would go with the advice of some others & call the base in question, or go to a base that issues them & get one for convenience, I doubt if anyone will take it off if you have one, but you may come to a base that still requires them. - RandACampinExplorer II

- RichertExplorerI was at Parris Island in April and they wanted me to have a DOD window sticker, guess the rules have changed there too! BTW after I received my sticker they still wanted to do 100% ID checks when entering. Go figure. I say "if you have a valid military ID active duty or retired I think that 99.55% of the time you are going to be granted access to the installation you desire to enter.
- Fleet_ManExplorerThe experiences are all over the place. Here is one more. My decals expire this month. I went to Pass and ID on Ft. Lewis, WA to renew them and was told the DOD sticker is all that is required anymore, not necessary to renew anything every two or three years as was the practice in the past.
- deltamasterExplorerMost of the military installations that I have visited in the past seven years do not require decals. Mine expired in 2006 and have never been renewed. I have never had to register at the gate. All I have had to do was show my ID card and away I went.
I just went to the Navy Hospital in Beaufort and the Parris Island Marine base in South Carolina last week and all I had to do was hand the guard my ID. The car I was driving does not even have an expired decal.
Beale AFB, FE Warren AFB, Lackland AFB, Sheppard AFB, Nellis AFB and the one in the middle of California do not require decals.
Seems tht decals are a thing of the past. They were not very secure anyway as back in the day a visit to most any Gypsie car dealer within a 20 mile radius of a military installation would find at least one vehicle on the lot with a current year base decal that someone forgot to remove before the vehicle sold.
Physical hands on of the ID and face-to-face of the occupant s MUCH better security-wise and only takes a few seconds longer for a trained MP/SF/SP. gafidler wrote:
Fort Hood, TX. requires a decal, don't know about other places
When did they start doing that again? 18 months ago they said they were no longer issuing the decals because they were no longer required.- Mark_and_LindaExplorerI have been to Fort Knox, Kentucky, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, had less problems than going into my local guard base. Most bases are 100 Percent ID Check. I also went into Hunter AAF last September and inquired...no problems. I have been to McDill, AFB, no problem without a sticker.
