Back to a tent oh my!

I know it is hard to believe but after owning a class c for 7 years, dw and dd are going on a quick trip to Calgary and Edmonton and gasp are going to tent.

Luckily we kept all the tenting supplies.

Why tent you say? For a quick trip the car that gets 500 km on $40.00 worth of gas compared to the RV that gets a bit over 300 km on $100.00 worth of gas wins hands down.

Especially since dd is going to go to the West Edmonton Mall.

We have a family tradition of one parent taking a child on a road trip the year they turn 16. This year it is dd's turn with mum.

We do have family in AB, so the tent may only be pitched once or twice on the trip.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I am in the same boat as you when we use our fifth wheel. So once a year myself and my wife take a trip with just our Touareg and a tent. This weekend coming up we are going to Jasper for two days and then hiking the Berg Lake trail in Mount Robson provincial park for two days. Nice thing about it is 40 mpg and I don't have to make a reservation for a tenting spot. All of the sudden there are tons of places to camp when you don't have a 36' fiver.

Mind you after a couple of nights on a thermarest and using community showers it sure is nice to go back to a memory foam and a familiar (always clean) shower.

Several years ago, we decided that we would like to go down the roads that the 5er could not negotiate. So, we purchased an Xterra and camping gear and were on our way. Had lots of fun exploring all the two tract back roads in Utah and northern Arizona. Then we noticed that there were trails that the Xterra could not negotiate. So, we purchased a RZR, joined an ATV club and started exploring all the Utah ATV trails. Again lots of fun. Now, My husband says that maybe we should think about getting a horse for real back country exploring. At our age(76),I think that's more of a challenge than I want to try.

We are tenting our way back to south TX where we left our TT after our winter stay. We haven't tent camped in 10 years! We are enjoying it so far and it is much easier with a dog. The weather has been wonderful to. Forgot about all the cooler maintenance that is required, and there is more work involved than a RV. But we wanted the tent available for beach camping, so here we are! ENJOY!

Good type of trip to take! In July 2012 I tented from Vancouver to Dawson Creek and then north on the Alaska Highway to Yukon with my 14-year-old niece. It was interesting and fun to just hit the road not knowing where or what we'd be doing next.
