A little known option is available for travelers passing through the Birmingham area on I-65. As many travelers have learned, Oak Mountain State Park campground is a decent stopover if you don't mind traveling the extra 20 minutes in and out of the park from the main entrance.
Some may have noticed that there are a few campers just through the trees to your left as you enter the park and, yes, they are available for all, when spots aren't occupied. They normally function as sites for equestrian campers but are seldom full. Not sure how many spots there are, but somewhere between 6 and 10. They all have full hookups and actually cost a little less than the regular campground. You tell the entrance guard that you want to spend the night and pay at the gate.
