Generator cranking a long time

I currently traveling and have spent a few nights in Walmart. When I try to start the gen, it cranks for about 45 sec before starting. I usually let off it to not overheat the starter. Is this normal? Plenty of gas and battery power. Onan 4k.

Just to rule out the obvious... ... Do you PRIME the generator beforehand?

Maybe a weak fuel pump.
