Because he was looking for the correct answer.
You have about a 50/50 chance getting that when you call Winegard tech support.

Because Bill.Satellite is too modest to defend his comments, Ed, you may not be aware that up until a few months ago, he was employed by Winegard as a regional trainer of dealers/installers.

So, in essence, he was relating the official Winegard information.

There is not a differing opinion. You CAN change from Dish to DirecTV NON-HD ONLY. You CAN change from a DirecTV Trav'ler to full HD Dish Service. You CANNOT change from Dish Trav'ler to DirecTV and receive ANY HD programming.
There it is in a nutshell.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.

but here is a wingard answer: 'Depending on your previous and new service providers, it may be possible to convert your TRAVโ€™LER antenna to be compatible with your new service provider. The following conversions are possible: SK-SWM3 to SK-1000, SK-3005 to SK-1000, and SK-1000 to SK-3003.'

Not sure why you quoted me. I believe I make it pretty clear what you can and cannot do. Maybe you did not read the whole post.

The DISH Travler SK-1000 can be changed to a DIrecTV Travler SK-3003.

I think the kits are RP-SK63 and RP-SK33 (about $350).

However, you'll end up with a a DirecTV SD -- not HD -- dish.

Why bother.

If you actually have a Winegard Trav'ler there are no dip switches and it cannot be changed from Dish to DirecTV and receive the DirecTV HD programming. It can be setup for DirecTV SD programming receiving only the programming from the 101 satellite is that's OK.
