MC4 tool

I am very new to solar. I consider myself of decent intelligence but am having problems with the tool to disconnect the mc4 connections. I bought 2 and both broke rather quickly. They are plastic and the one of the two fingers broke when trying to use. I do not think I am using it incorrectly but you never know. Are there actual instructions for these? Is this a common problem ? Are these different by manufacturer? Thanks
