40 climbs gently through Alberta prov. parks that rival Banff in views and camping options. Highwood Pass is the highest paved pass in Alberta. The stop here is often busy, but worth it. Wildlife viewing is usually good, and there's a nice walk. In the fall the tree colors are great (esp. the yellow alpine larch). It then drops gradually.
Where it turns east, there's a gas station and a turn off to 940, which is a gravel road that takes you all the way to Coleman on Hwy 3 (Crowsnest). Parts of this gravel road are also signed 40. But the paved route follows a river east to Longview. This is the south Alberta oil patch.
22 south from Longview follows the Alberta front range - open ranch country with distant views of the mountains to the west. There are one or two provincial parks on this stretch. It could be windy.
Where 22 meets 3, there a view/stop at Lundbreck falls (and prov. rec site camping). A bit to the west is the Frank Slide interpretive center. And 6 takes you south to Waterton.
