Background: Big wind storm in South texas, tree limb falls on 5th wheel smashing back, including window TIP is on. Not connected to Pick up, no insurance, Police report etc. Not that I think it would matter. 5 th wheel to Junk yard.
Go to Brownsville, closest crossing 7 hours away with old fifth wheel TIP papers and with my new to me ( old) 5th wheel.
Tried to get old TIP cancelled and new on issued. You can probably guess the who's on first routine that went on. Finally after 4 1/2 hours They reached an agreement with themselves... I was to go get the old one and bring it so they can cancel it. tried to pay fine, sign paper that old Trailer was destroyed, Just kept being shown copy of regulation that says must be removed at crossing.
HMMM... not a big deal just can not take a trailer in for another 6.5 years.
Any thoughts?

If that is true, as soon as he gets a new passport number he should use the on-line method to get a new TIP. In this way at least he will find out if he should bother taking the new trailer to the border.

My understanding the TIP is tied to his USA passport number so if he renews his passport there is no longer a tie to the old TIP. Therefore he will be issued a New TIP for the New RV on his New passport number. When USA renews your passport your passport number changes.

You CANNOT get another TIP in the same owners name at any border unless you legally cancelled the old one. If you don't follow the rules, I would suggest you put the title in another person's name who is crossing the border with you. I know lots of people who could not cross the border with their vehicles.

I'm not even going with details. Just said that I left the sticker on the vehicle sold.
I sure hated to send originals though. Oh well, just have to wait now and see. Sometimes i get lucky and he gives me one.

I too have been going through hell trying to get one cancelled. So far I have spent over $100 @ DHL. I sent the last one about 18 days ago so maybe in another 2 weeks I will get a reply. If they do not cancel I will just give up.

Mexico got arrogant once it figured out fly-in tourists arrive, dump ten grand in a week then leave. The TIP process (Temporary Importation Permit) is only simple of nothing goes wrong....like them losing your proof of return out of their database and you see your cash register grade thermal print receipt has faded to "blank". Or a PFP wrote a wrong number or letter in the VIN number report when he was furnishing proof your totaled rig was indeed legally towed to a corralon federal.

Want to help END the problem?

If you see a Green Angel truck, ask for "un forma para denuncias y quejas"

Fill it out. Specify the thermal printed receipt method is bogus. You want an AUTHENTIC printed receipt issued to you at the border. SIGNED with the Aduanero's NAME and employee BADGE NUMBER.

Yes the form will actually go to Aduana and yes someone actually has to fill it out and specify an answer. Bureaucratic Mexico HATES THIS WITH A PURPLE PASSION.

Or you can wait for your own personalized nightmare to arrive. It will, sooner or later.

DHL is expensive but hey got my application to the correct office in Mexico City in one day. After that communication was easy and I got my permit cancelled in a couple of weeks.

The form that Tequila's link goes to is the same one that I have on my website; only mine also has an English translation. I also tell you what documentation you need and how to handle all this (Example: do NOT use the mail system!).

Heres a direct LINK to the forms. However you will still have to log into either my sticky at the top of this forum or my website to get the rest of the info.

Not trying to one-up anyone, just trying to help.

Oh, and TIP stands for Temporary Import Permit. I also describe where and when you need one of these things on both locations. You'll also find out what RCNC stands for :B Which appears to apply to your situation!

Do not use the English translation when you send in the form, you have to use the Spanish language form. Just use the the english as a guide if you do not understand spanish.

My friend used DHL to deliver the forms, apparently they are the most reliable for Mexican destinations.

For the first time I know of Aduana will cancel TIP's permits at certain consulates at certain times.

http://www.aduanas.gob.mx/aduana_mexico/2008/vehiculos/141_10028.html

Do you have the sticker from the broken glass? Do you have any paperwork from the junk yard?

They will be in Houston and Dallas in October. Fill out all the forms suggested above, bring pictures of the smashed RV, try to get a police report of some kind. Then go to a consulate, play stupid, and beg. Good luck

this shows why you should always cancel it when you leave and just pay the $40 again next time.

A friend got his cancelled this spring with a police report that the vehicle was in Canada, including its VIN. Had to be on official police letterhead, in this case the RCMP. As turtle said it takes 4 months. In his case it was a tow car and they cancelled it 2 days after the 180 days was up so he lost his deposit. How convenient

I gave him a call and he sent me the link to the form you have to fill out and said it has to be mailed with a police report on the accident with the VIN number of the vehicle on it. The form has the address.

FORM

In your case the police report may not be possible but it would not hurt to try filling out the form & mailing it in anyway. Maybe a report from the insurance company?

Other solution if the TIP was registered in your name is to put the new one in your wifes.

BTW the line in Spanish "Por lo cual anexo la siguiente documentación" means "I am attaching the following documents". That implies they wants some sort of documentation.

The people at the border cannot cancel a tip unless you have the vehicle with you! Check my sticky entitled New and Improved Border FAQ's at the top of this forum for more info. You can also go to my Turtle and Toad website and click on the blue BORDER FAQ for additional info, including the address and forms you will need to cancel your TIP. It can take as long as 3-4 months, but that's still better than 6+ years.
