Got back late Wednesday night from our trip to Alberta (wound up in BC as well). Stayed 5 days up in Jasper and 6 in Canmore (just outside Banff). I can't say enough wonderful things about Canmore. It's like Banff but far less touristy and far more "Canadian" in feel. From it's beautiful location to it's fantastic people the twenty minute drive to Banff is well worth it. Far more economical as well. Got to "party with the locals" at the ceilidh after the Highland Games. What a blast! Made friends with one of the game's participants (emcee actually) and got invited to the party AFTER the party but didn't go as we were exhausted. It's the first Canadian city we could really see ourselves living in. Not ready to move YET but one never knows!

Glad you enjoyed Canmore. It's the town (along with Kananaskis Area ) that locals head to. Beautiful scenery , and lots of great trails and things to do. Great area for seeing bears too !
It has interesting country to the south as well, the if you don't mind going up a really high hill. Friends from here retired in Camore and love it. Great golf, she says.
