Good route from Denver to Newport, Oregon

Trying to plan a trip from the Denver area to just south of Newport, Oregon with a 5th wheel. Would like to try to avoid really steep mountain passes if at all possible. Looking at taking I-25 north to I-80, then 84 to Portland, then south. Any other ideas are welcome! Just found one more route but unsure of how good the roads are. I 80 to I 84, then highway 20 west to Newport.

You cannot avoid mountain passes -- you can only manage them. You'll probably think you're clear of mountains once you get to SLC, but that's not true. Some long climbs on I-84, topped off by the long winding descent at Cabbage Hill east of Pendleton.

Just take them slow and carefully.

US 20 west of I/84 is a nice ride. There are some twisties and climbs but nothing scary. In the twisty section there are lots of pull offs so you can let the traffic go by. West of Bend, going down there are enough turns and switch backs that you have to work a bit and you have to be on the lookout for a "Sasquash" crossing the road.

Good route. From the Portland area I'd go towards Longview and then over to Astoria. Not only is Astoria and Ft Stevens great areas but you're now headed S on the Oregon coast.

Over the years we've taken a number of routes between 5 and 101 with current rig and toad with hills of course but nothing major in case you choose a different route.

Given your concern I highly recommed Mountain Directory West.

1.Take a look at Hwy.80 straight to Sacremento. The go north to Hwy. 20 at Williams then west to 101. Then you have straight drive north along the Oregon coast to Newport Or. This route is the most RV friendly going around Clear Lake.This is my prefrence if I am looking for a leisurely RV friendly route. Normally I take I-5 to Oregon 138.

2.Or, you could keep going north to Redding Ca. taking Hwy 299 west to 101 at Acarta ca. Hwy. 299 can be a little slower if there is construction going on.

3. Or, you could continue north of I-5. You have 1 big hill but is not that long over to Ashland Or. then take Hwy. 138 west to Florence. Suggest you stop at the Canyonville Casino RV Park. Super nice park.
4. The route you posted. The Dalles along the Columbian river can get a little windy.

I have driven all the routes in a 34' 5th. wheel. Be sure and check the CARR (California State Road conditions) application on your iPhone.
