Motorcycle less than 250CC TIP with RV.

Just crossed the border at Colombia yesterday and customs issued me a 6 months permit for the RV class A and listed the scooter on the RV TIP.

I was reading on post dated a few years back that less than 250CC you do not need a TIP and it will be part of the RV TIP, just carry the paper with you.

I just want to hear from someone if it is still the same rules that applies, I hope so, and I want to have some argument if I have to discuss the issue with a Police officer.

The custom officer told me that they could only issue a 6 month permit since I have the Scooter listed on the TIP. I asked again and the officer insisted. She seemed to be the supervisor and she was training a new women to do the job.

Isn't it amazing NAVEGATOR?

Once a vehicle gets impounded to a CORRELON FEDERAL, it never leaves.

A vehicle that does not check out a TIP at the border or having paperwork showing the vehicle is physically possessed by a Correlon Federal, the vehicle becomes delinquent. Five pounds of official police and documents from an abogado are sneered at by Aduana at the border. Only the physical vehicle or SAT document from a Correlon Federal will cancel a TIP. The three folks I spoke with whom surrendered old or wrecked vehicles to a Correlon Federal said taking the documents to the Aduana office at the border did absolutely nothing. They shrugged their shoulders. Correlon impoundment is internal. It was said it takes longer than a month to get a TIP released, electronically.

Do carry the sticker and a copy of the TIP with you when you ride, if anything happens and the transito or any other, including the army in a reten should question the legality of the motorcycle and you can not prove that it is legal, they will confiscate the bike.

Once confiscated you will not get it back no matter what you do, trying to prove legality after the fact is 100% waste of time, no judge will even hear the case.

Do not be fooled and think that it does not or will not happen, do not tempt your luck.

From what I read there should be no problem, I have the paper anyway from Customs. Someone else also told me they never put the sticker on the bike anyway.

I have a 1000cc motorcycle that we've toured through Mexico on for four years. We do get a TIP for it but keep the sticker with the paperwork - not applying it to the bike. No one appears to care about the missing sticker and I suspect that we could skip getting a TIP for the bike in the future without an issue. I always will - just in case.

Up to and including 499 cc. Have heard of hassles for this class if license plate and road lights were in place. Might be a good idea to remove the license plate.

Friends said they put the plate back on where they camped and no problems with transitos around the beaches and roadways. Not supposed to get caught on federal highways by the PFP Federal Police if bike is part of a TIP. Carry a copy of your home registration in case ownership of the bike is questioned.

Hope This Helps
