Just left Marathon, Tx heading home. Took hwy 349 from US 90 up to I10. That was one beautiful drive! Anyone in the area that wants to see the scenery, I highly recommend it. Safe travels.

Yesterday we drove FM 16 and the part between Fredericksburg and Llano was beautiful.

Texas has a four tier system: Interstates, Federal (US) numbered, State Highways (ex. TX 149), and Farm to Market Roads. The Farm to Market roads are usually indicated FM (example FM 1649). The number of digits is only significant in one way: the smaller the number the earlier it was added to the system. Smaller numbers sometimes mean tighter curves as the earlier FM roads generally followed the old county and local roads. However, we frequently choose FM roads and find most of them quite acceptable--just not as fast. Texas state roads are usually very good.

The somewhat back roads up in North Texas around the Wichita Falls areas are all nice travel roads... I guess they do the same as in other states where the roads priority are biggest with the smallest road numbers... One and two numbers state roads here in VA are very nice roads. The three digit roads are somewhat less and most four digit roads are most often not through roads... They usually dead-end inside a residential area etc...

West and Central Texas should be in full bloom flower wise this time of the year. Bluebonnets and Indian Blankets were always my favorite...
