Utah 276 and Ferry

We will be entering southern Utah in a week or so in route to the Bullfrog area of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. We'd like to take 276 to Hall's Crossing and take the ferry across lake Powell to the Bullfrog area.

Does anyone have information about the suitability of southern 276 for a truck/fifth wheel combination? Anything about the ferry that we should consider?

Thanks for any information.
  • Thanks for the replies. We'll look out for the black cows; hopefully we won't need the BLM campground near Halls Crossing, but it sure is nice to know it is there!
  • Some years ago, coming from the south (Mokee Dugway) we got to Hall's Crossing late in the day, after the last sailing (ignoring any signs on hwy 95 about ferry hours). But that was ok, we had a nice night at the park (blm?) campground on the hill above the crossing (a bit windy though).

We crossed the next morning, along with the area school bus. The ramp down to water level was long but not too steep. That varies with water level.
  • UT 276 has a ton of boat trailer traffic - it will be fine for a truck/5er.

I would be very cautious about using the ferry. It seems like it is down more than it is running.

The other option would be to come down through Hanksville, and on to Bullfrog bypassing the ferry.

If you are coming in at night, make sure you slow down south of Hanksville - it is open range, and there are roaming black cows that like to hang out on the highway. You won't see them until it is too late.

We go to Powell 5 or 6 times per year. My favorite place.
