Last year we attended classes at the Alabama Folk School at Camp McDowell NW of Birmingham. We camped 25 minutes away at Clear Creek Campground in the Bankhead National Forest.
I took blacksmithing classes and my wife loved the Gee's Bend quilting. The prices are far more reasonable than some of the other folk schools and the classes were less crowded and more enjoyable. If you don't want to RV, they have clean lodging and good meal plans. I think we've found our favorite folk school. I recommend getting the meal plan for the food and to meet some of the other people in a non-structured setting for good conversation.
Clear Creek is a water-electric hookup with a dump station. It's clean, quiet and there's plenty of room between the campsites for privacy. We stayed on Bear's loop but there are some fantastic sites on the lake too. Pets are allowed but ours stayed at the s&b since we were gone most of the day for the classes.
Great trip and fun memories. We'll be back. Hope they offer the Gumbo Academy class when we go again. I have GOT to do that one.
