Will be staying at Shields RV park at Gulfport for December and January and would like to know about things to do. Adults with pets no children. We have been there one time for a short stay and did not have time to explore. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

New Orleans is about 1 1/2 hrs - Mobile AL is an hour away. There is a huge flea market in Mobile (search online) there are Mardi Gras parades in various towns all around starting beginning of Feb ( search Mardi Gras 2017) and the casinos and they all have entertainers there for shows. There is a sidewalk that runs along the beach and you can bicycle 28 miles along the coast. There is an alligator farm with air boat rides I think in Moss Point. Take a boat out to Cat Island . Look for christmas activites in all the towns around. There is a boat parade in Biloxi, Waveland and maybe others. Nothing is far away, so wander the coast. Could even visit Pensacola FL or Dophin Island for a day. Have Fun

We will be at Shields during the same time period. You can go to Mobile and tour the USS Alabama. New Orleans is less than 100 miles away. There is a museum for Stennis Space Center right off I-10. And there are the casinos. All but one are smoking and we detest the smell of cigarette smoke so we stay away from the casinos and the buffets are not good either. Our favorite place for seafood is Desportes Seafood. It is a seafood market but has a small restaurant with great seafood (lunch only). We do not like The Shed. Their BBQ in our opinion is not very good. Sauces are very sweet and meat tastes like it was cooked in a crockpot. Driving US 90 along the Gulf is always great.

The Shed BBQ joint is somewhere close by also. It has been on DDD several times.

I would make a day trip to the small towns in southern louisiana of I-10! We spent 2 weeks there and they are true gems! Madisonville is one. In Bay St. Louis, the knock-knock lounge and attached restaraunt has great seafood! The casinos in the area have great buffets!

A few Miles to the West, in Pass Christian, MS, there is a great place to eat and watch the sun go down and enjoy charbroiled oysters several different ways. And on Mondays there is a special on a really nice thick cut pork chop for 10 bucks. Try them out. " Bachus On the Beach" 111 W Scenic Dr, Pass Christian, MS 39571-4419, +1 228-222-4852. https://www.yelp.com/biz/bacchus-on-the-beach-pass-christian

Darwell's Cafe- was on DDD, super food, nothing is fried, there is usually a local musician playing there in the evenings. 127 E First St Long Beach, MS 39560 228-868-8946 http://darwellscafe.com/

Somewhere on the coast, there are Shrimping Educational Tours where you can see how shrimp are cough and how they processed,

Also, in NOLA, their is the D-Day Museum.

Nasa Used to give tours up at the rocket testing grounds, at the state line in Ms.

Just outside of Mobile there is a beautiful place called BELLINGRATH GARDENS.

Look it up was well worth the trip for us when we stayed in gulf shores last year.

Check "Trip Advisor" for the Gulfport/Biloxi area. Quite a bit to see and do in the area besides the beach & casinos - - several museums and historic homes to visit, etc.

My daughter lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a couple of years, ten minute walk to a beach on Mississippi Bay. I visited often, mostly in the cooler months.

Many folks go to this coast for the off-shore casinos. While there are outdoor activities in coastal swamps, winter is not the usual season for these attractions. Any place you visit has at least a little bit of history, but most of the historical sites in southern Mississippi are somewhat more inland, Civil War battle sites and preserved plantations.

Expect weather to be cool and wet at Gulfport during those months, lows in the low 40s, highs in the low 60s. Gulfport gets rain year-round, averaging about six inches a month. In January and February it tends to be more of a constant grayness and lighter rain, rather than the drenching and flash flooding storms of spring.
