Forest Service closes all camp grounds in OR - Sept. 30th

The article says all campgrounds, etc closed through Sept. 30th unless rescinded. But the premise is that they are closing due to public restrooms and such. The Governor of Oregon is doing everything to keep people from going places and gathering outside of their homes.

I sure think this is overkill.

I few weeks ago I got a letter from the Oregon State Parks explaining why they closed - one of the logics behind their move was their desire to keep campers from infecting the small communities near the parks. Those small communities have very limited medical facilities and would be easily overwhelmed by the virus. Kinda made sense to me and in the big picture closure is just an inconvenience and if it helps contain the virus then so be it.

It has been stated numerous times. Most recently by Dr. Deborah Brix in last weeks Covid briefing.

“This is getting out of hand.” What? It’s “out of hand” in Illinois...19,180 infected and 677 deaths. Oregon doesn’t want to follow Illinois.

Those are the numbers they want you to believe! They aren’t giving us the real numbers. Only the numbers they want us to hear so they can continue to push us and see how far we will go. There are 12 million people
In IL, of that 677 have died. Those are the numbers that should be looked at.. that’s .00005642%.

To put it in perspective, in 2017 80,000 people died in the U.S. from the regular flu that we have a vaccination for! COVID-19 right now is at 22,000!!!!! Now explain to me how this is worse than the flu other than it lingers longer in your system?

People get sick and people die. That’s life! Sorry to be blunt, but this is what we were taught in school!

On the topic of the governor’s order, the September date is primarily administrative because it needed some kind of date. It’s likely set way far beyond what would ever be needed to avoid having to update it yet again, which is what happened to some that were originally set to expire in early April. All of the orders are effectively “until rescinded” and shouldn’t last until September. I really hope I’m right.

I’m not sure it was quite that extreme but in March at least, the guidance from CDC was pretty lenient and more or less encouraged counting them if it “contributed”. See links in post here: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/30067096/gotomsg/30068798.cfm#30068798

What I don’t know if what it takes for states to report a Covid19 death. Contributing only or actual cause?

I don't have any reservation in forest service area in Oregon. We have reservation in Oregon and Washington for the entire month of July which were made in 2019. I contacted all campgrounds Thursday and Friday last week. All expected to be open for business. One a state park in Washington which really didn't know but felt they would be open. Another private campground in Washington was restricted but felt they would be open if conditions continued to improve. All campgrounds in Oregon & Washington were open now other than the two mentioned. FYI Grand Canyon trailer city is scheduled to reopen May 22, 2020. Hope all goes as planned.

In the USA they are counting anyone who died and had Covid a Covid death regardless of actual cause. That isn't the same as other countries nor is it the same as they did with H1N1 or other global viruses in the USA.

This is what they've done in many Arizona state parks. No day use of the parks, hiking trails etc. All visitor centers and facilities are closed. Park open only for those with site reservations.

IMHO it is better to be safe than sorry. It is possible the shut down can be amended at a later date. Keeping the majority public safe outweighs the freedom (camping at that) of the few.

Except that this is not the first pandemic we've had nor is it the worst. We never went to these lengths any of those other times. The 'cure' can easily be worse than the cause.

You have been unsuccessful at keeping your home state’s campgrounds open, wildtoad, but your Corona virus numbers seem to me to be improving. What other measures has your state taken that you would discontinue and how many additional infections and deaths would you tolerate?

Closing campgrounds does two things..discourages travel and keeps state workers home with their families. Both help end this pandemic.
