Free campground website?

A year or two ago I seem to recall someone posting a link to a good website listing various places to camp across the US that are free or minimal cost. Anyone know the site or have links to some worth looking at?

We are Thousand Trails members and they don't have CGs in a large area of the central US. We're planning to head into Montana & Wyoming this summer (from southwest BC) and would like to find some low cost or free places to overnight at enroute to/from Yellowstone, our prime destination. Need to be safe and secure places and no Walmarts, truck stops, rest stops and the like.

We've stayed at Casinos a number of times but they aren't always where you need one or have RV sites. Will be in late Aug. to mid-Sept. and hopefully there will be more RV sites available out there with kids heading back to school. Have seen a few too many frightening Criminal Minds episodes and movies (like Kurt Russell's Breakdown for ex.)about abduction and worse and want to be able to sleep well...

Another vote for Ultimate Campgrounds. I've noticed that in the past few months they have been adding thousands of USFS dispersed locations - all free.

Campendium.com has a "Free" tab that generally has more useful info and photos for its campsites than Freecampsites.com.

freecampgrounds.com no longer maintains their database of free/cheap campgrounds. However, they still have some information and links.
