Received the following information from The NPS at Fort Sumter. If this is on your schedule to visit, you might want to reconsider. In addition, there are no facilities for disabled, neither ramps or elevators to get to the dirty restrooms anyway. Handicap elevators are in place, but do not work, and there are no plans for repair. Disablity access laws do not apply to Federal sites, unless needed by Congress.

Why? There is hardly any staff left to clean them. For the information of all, especially those riding the 9:30 boat from Liberty Square, restrooms at the the fort will not be available during the entire first boat's time on the island. Please use the restrooms available on board the boat during our travel time, which will be around 30 minutes". I would not include giving directions to the restrooms as part of your first boat briefing. *Also at Fort Sumter, the doors to the museum and book store are in such bad shape, they are coming off their hinges. All will be replaced within the next month.
The book store can only be accessed from the door on the gorge side (right side).
The door adjacent to the museum will be kept locked so it does not fall on anyone.

If the Facilities at a big football stadium were not maintained, or inaccessable to disabled, there would be a uprising heard across the nation. Not enough funds to clean the restrooms at a National Monument? Or repair the doors? Who cares?

Whenever we camp, we like to visit historical sites. There's just so much history to see in this relatively new country of ours. Some of the sites are national parks, some are state parks. It's been appalling to us some of the conditions we've seen. The story is always the same. They're not allocated enough money. My hat goes off to the rangers and volunteers who do what they can to keep things going the best they can.

Yes it is. Other than spreading the word, there is not much we can do about it. I gotta stop here, my blood pressure is rising.
