Northeast Kansas

I'm planning a four day road trip through northeast Kansas, the first week in May. I'm looking for anyone's thoughts on "must-see" places. Last year we went through Northeast Iowa and someone recommended "Field of Dreams". That was exceptional. I'm looking for the same kind of ideas here.

We're ending up in Kansas City to see the Royals v Tigers. Should be an awesome game since I think they will both have their issues this coming year, but my friend is a Royals fan and I am a diehard Tigers fan.

Thanks in advance of any advice you may give us!

My favorite is the Amelia Earhart Birthplace in Atchison, about half a day. You don't want to get your east of 2nd street, however, as the old streets are tight, the slopes going down the bluff quite steep, with some of the dips needing more departure angle than you'll have on the rear of your C.

Topeka has an incredible museum of the state’s history. A nice air museum at the old Air Force Base / City airport - Forbes Field. Also an Evel Knievel Museum.

We stayed at the COE park on Perry Lake. 30amp/ water hookups

A couple of ideas depending on your interests.

Must see: Truman Presidential Library in Independence and his home located in the same city.

Other suggestions , Ft. Leavenworth and the city of Leavenworth. You may do some research on getting onto Ft. LV with an RV. It is a restricted access post since 9/11. The museum is great and the self guided tour is nice. Lots of history.

The Nelson Atkins Art Gallery in KC.

Atchison KS has a nice Amelia Earhart museum and the college has some interesting architecture.

Weston MO has the McCormick Distillery and a small town atmosphere.

Sad to say the only place you can get a Runza down here is in Lawrence KS. The one on Johnson Dr in KC just closed.

Well Luvz,

It isn't outdoors, but it is an amazing stop. It is best done on a week day because the lot is shared.

This place is Steamboat Arabia Museum. Read about it first, if you are not fascinated, get there and spend the money on the tour anyway. It is not as bad as trying to explain the fountains at Belagio, but it is close. I am not going to write more about it here because every time I try, I realize that I left out too much.

A sailor, his bride and their black dogs (one dear dog is waiting for us at the bridge) going to see some dry places that have Geocaches in a coach made the year we married.
