We have stayed in just about every USFS campground along the Taylor River north of Gunnison. They are all very nice campgrounds. Some are along the river and some are across the road from the river. It cannot be called a highway because it has a small amount of traffic during the day and none at night. A few of the campgrounds have electric sites which can be reserved through ReserveAmerica. There are no water or sewer hookups. Lakeview Campground on the Taylor Reservoir is our favorite located at just over 9,000 feet with a great view of the lake.

We camped there back in the days we tent camped on motorcycles... maybe 1992 or something like that. It was heaven. No noise. Hardly anyone but us there. Cold flowing stream at the back of our site... it was so nice that we returned to it a few years later. We did not stay. Rafters come from other campgrounds between Gunnison and Crested Butte by the bus load.

Just pick your time there carefully if you don't want to be in the middle of that.

There is ONE site with electric and it is non-reservable and held only for handicapped who need CPAP.

There is NO dump, and the nearest is about 15 miles UP the mountain past Taylor Reservoir or 15 miles down to Gunnison.

It is a USFS campground without any services and is right next to the hiway.
