painting interior walls

We are not crazy about the inside decor of our 5. Anyone have any info on what issues painting the walls creates?

You don't need oil primer. There are lots of water based products on the market. Primer and paint in one are only good if your covering a like paint...ie......interior latex over interior latex. There is a latex primer called Zinnser 123. Latex and will stick to almost any substrate. Not all paint is created equal. Due to raw material costs, similar to gas pricing, there is no such thing as a $25 gallon of paint being the same as a $40 gallon.
As said earlier don't cheap out and follow the instructions. 98% of paint failures are caused by improper preparation or not thorough enough prep.

I spent over 40 years selling and helping develope coatings in the paint industry.

PS.....Try to shop at a "paint store" not a big box store that sells paint as one of their 40,000 other products. You should receive better and more experienced advice. :W
Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

It could be some work involved, yes. I would pull all the cabinet doors and do them on a work table, outside. The face frames would be done in situ and I'd drop cloth the whole interior. The cabinet carcasses would be masked.

I've done this a handful of times and have spray equipment so the work goes fast.

An alternative to painting the cabinets might be to strip, bleach and refinish in a lighter tone. Due to the way most cabinets are finished, today, with a spray urethane or catalyzed lacquer, it would be necessary to sand off or chemically remove the existing finish. This is usually beyond the scope of most homeowners or RV'ers.

somebody advertises, perhaps home depot and Behr, that their product is a combination primer/paint.

Behr..combination primer and finish paint in one....lol:D

I paint for a living and wouldn't use the brand unless my customer is adamant that it be used. There are much better paints available than Behr. I recently used Glidden M150 primer and paint and thought it was good as an economy paint.
For an RV, over the existing coverings or wallpaper, I would use an oil based primer and a paint that has some ceramic in it, for durability.

I realize this is an older post, but I am planning on painting Mobi this summer. I will take your suggestion about oil based primer and paint with ceramic in it (never heard of that but I am sure I can find it locally).

What do you suggest for painting over the oak (yes real wood) cabinets? I want to lighten up the whole interior.
Painting clear finished wood is a tragedy but I know some folks prefer it. For Oak, you will probably want to use a sanding sealer or pore filler to fill the open grain. Sand the filler and paint as suggested.

I have an account with SW, use them a lot for generic painting and even some esoteric stuff like metal tanks filled with sub-zero product.

Grasshopper, paint it is all the same, as much as the offspring of the Blue Whale or a house cat, they are both babes, lol.
