Covering a 5er.

I have a cover for my 5er. Have covered it three times in the past 5 years of owning the cover. All three time I got up on the roof. My DW has said no more roof walking and on more ladders. I would appreciate anyone thoughts on covering the trailer.

I think your elephant barn is the best choice, I wish I had the room to build one so I could pull in one end and out the other.

I haven't heard a lot of good things about covers for RVs. Like condensate under the cover, hard to take off and on, hard to fold properly, etc. I wanted to get one, but my wife put her foot down. Reason being is I recently had heart surgery and she thinks it's too much trouble. So we had what I call an "elephant barn" put in. A 16'X36'X12' tall carport. The 12' height is at the side, so there is plenty of room in the middle. Had all the extras- heavy-duty mobile home tie-downs, siding down one sheet further than stock, extra roof bracing, etc. Came in at a little over $3K. When we get too old to camp, I swear I'm going to buy an elephant!

3ares post says The folding of the cover when removing it is very important.

I have just this year put a cover on my fifthwheel and wondered how I was to fold it up when I remove it.

Not to steal the thread but anyone have a solution ?

I put the cover outside top up on the ground and the sides on top of the outside top. Then fold into the cover's box back end first. When I put the cover on I start in the front and work my way to the back end of the trailer; tie the cover down and look forward to SPRING!

I dump mine on the ground, and then lay it out, fold it up, and put it in its' bag.

When I used a cover, the manufacturer Adco, said to fold it into a large trash barrel, back end first, for storage.

BTW, didn't need that temp report! Can't p outside here, due to freezing before it hits the ground!!

Never been on my roof. No plans to ever go there. Hire someone or leave it alone. In the length of time I plan to own this covering the roof won't make much difference. Then it becomes the next owners problem...

These days age is not the same as it was. Every one ages differently and if one has exercised to keep the muscles and bones in good shape and led a health life over the years they can do things at 80 that some at 60 could not do. In other words it is a personal thing and not everyone has treated the bodies the same over the years. BTY at 78 I am still doing covers, washing and waxing as well as maintenance. I feel blessed that I can still do that safely.

I'm 72 and agree with others that as you get older your balance is not as good as when young. Our fithwheel has a total of four jacks besides the landing gear. All this makes the RV steady as a rock-this really helps stability and I try to avoid getting to close to the sides. The folding of the cover when removing it is very important.

I am 78 and still get up on the roof several times a year. I don't stand up anymore though but do as a previous poster does and crawl on hands and knees. When you get older, the balance is not as good as it is when younger and I don't want to take chances of falling.

That is the same reason I gave up riding my Harley a few years ago. Just didn't seem too steady on it any more after about 65 years of riding.

I am 72. We just put our cover on till March. If the cover is folded properly it is an EASY job. I just go very slow. Of coarse I feel 30.

At 64 I go up on the roof for whatever need without a second thought. No grumbles from the DW yet. As long as she hears activity up there she is happy.

Roof work is a necessity every couple of years on our Bermuda home which involves using a pressure washer then painting with a long staff brush. I stay off the outside slopes these days. Son does the more dangerous work.

I look at the trailer roof as being no different than any other flat surface so there should be no fear of being up there.

I get up on my roof via the rear mounted ladder all the time and have yet to stand up. I use my daughter's volleyball knee pads and everything is just fine.

Getting someone younger to help might be the best answer......except maybe for a potential liability issue.

The only other solution I know is to get two LONG and fairly lightweight poles, tall enough so that one person on either side can pass the end of the cover over the RV while standing on the ground.

Telescoping aluminum poles probably would be the best; easier to store when in the collapsed position.

I'm about to be in a similar situation. A friend sold me a cover he doesn't need and I used the walk-on-roof method the first time. Mine only sits idle about 4 months of the year....in Florida.....where the winters are usually fairly dry and mild (but as I type this there is a severe storm watch out).
I may just sell it.
