Tires & DOT

So...been dealing with tires and tire posts for many years and have a plethora of experience with them.

However I have a new challenge. Dealers seldom carry my tire in stock and they must be ordered either from the local tire guy or online. The issue is, they all say they have no say regarding DOT Date Codes when their suppliers send the tires. They are legal to sell as "new" up to four years after they are dated.

Ordering online is easy, reasonably priced and free shipping however...if they arrive with a four-year old date code I have to pay shipping to return which is very pricey on four Goodyear 614's.

I replace these tires every five years per DOT Code. I have been lucky over the past two purchases and got tires dated within a few months of install but I was able to select the tires onsite. This no longer seems possible.

What is the consensus regarding DOT Date versus "put in service" date on the integrity of a new tire?

Many thanks!

It was bound to happen, and it did. Any experts want to weigh in? Luckily, no damage to fifth wheel or rim. 2 year old Sailun S637 , inflated to 100 psi."

Never heard if this was road hazard or a bad tire???

Road Hazard , it happens. No damage ,and to the tires credit, it did not come apart, stayed together. How far it ran deflated is anybodies guess. No it was not a blowout. If I would have had a TPMS ,this conversation in most likelihood would not be happening. I do run TPMS now.

Do you have a written determination from Sailun? Until then it's a guess.

No written, just a lengthy conversation with a Sailun rep. sure its a guess .But when a tire blows ,there is no mistake what happened , its loud ,and obvious. We have been over this before, and I reported about a patrolman behind a fifth wheel when a Goodyear G614 blew out, scared the daylights out of him, more then the guy that it happened to . There is no mistake or guess work when a tire blows out at 100 psi or more.

When I observed my tire with the smoke bellowing off of it ,thats when I knew I had lost the tire, It ran flat until it heated up ,and started smoking. As said to its credit being a quality steel cased tire it stayed together . Small pieces of rubber were stuck to the side of the fifth wheel, but that was about it ,no damage to trailer or wheel. We have seen what blown outs do, and taken part of the fifth wheel with them.

Ron, my point was most on here are very knowledgeable ,especially about tire failures , brand quality etc. We have read over the years about tire failures, and Goodyear has been in that mix. If Goodyear has improved ,that is great. Some of the threads I have read say they are still having issues. Tire experts are great, but real world experience is what really counts.

As far as the Endurance, no way on the heavier fifth wheels, they are E rated, and IMO overrated as far as weight rating goes.

As far as Discount Tire, they will not touch a 17.5 rim at my local store and the rep said they won't in my area....period. I questioned the fact they sell GY114 tires and he said, "yep, but don't install them". He said they will not install any tire that takes more than 90 psi....period. Very nice about it but very definitive.

CapriRacer what trailer tire would you buy today price NOT being a factor in a "E", "G" and "H" ratings?

Although it sure helps ,but there was no price factor involved in my decision to purchase Sailun S637 tires. I would be willing to bet the decision to go Sailun after owning Goodyear tires is the fact its a better G and H rated tire . I have read that statement too many times to not believe its the deciding factor. Plus is was because of a Goodyear failure

If this tire expert wants to endorse Goodyear , which he did on the Endurance , great . I do not need a tire expert to tell me what many already knows about the Sailun or Goodyear. Experience speaks volumes on these tires . We know your experience with Goodyear its been posted many many times. I know my experience , and am very capable of making my own decisions, as many others do too.

Nuh, uh!! Sailun's warranty starts from the date of purchase.

All Sailun tire lines are warranted against failures due to defects in workmanship & materials for the life of the original tread, or 5 years from the date or purchase, (whichever occurs first).

Thanks for clarifying. This is where I misunderstood:

LIMITED WARRANTY AGAINST DEFECTS-PRORATED
STA shall replace an eligible Sailun Medium Radial Truck Tire covered by
this limited warranty that becomes unserviceable due to a defect in design,
workmanship, or material after the first 50% of the original tread life on a
prorated basis. The amount of the allowance is determined based on the
percentage of the original “Useable Tread” remaining when the tire is presented
for adjustment. The percentage allowance is applied to the purchase price of
a comparable new Sailun Medium Radial Truck Tire or other comparable tire
brand marketed by TBC Corporation. You are responsible for paying for the
price of the warranty replacement tire after the appropriate warranty allowance
is deducted plus the charges for mounting and balancing the replacement
tire as well as any applicable fees and/or taxes. The benefits of this limited
warranty for defects in design, material and workmanship terminate once the
Useable Tread of a Sailun Medium Radial Truck Tire has been exhausted or eight
(8) years from date of manufacture indicated on the tire, whichever is earlier.

All Sailun products are covered by an industry leading new 6-year
warranty.

This is all good to know, they are great tires, and have not read where anyone has used their warranty. Nor do we have to worry about them coming apart ,and tearing up a fifth wheel . I have yet to see or hear of a fifth wheel being damaged because of a Sailun blowout.

I could care less if another brand covers trailer damage, I have insurance for that. I want a tire that does not leave me beside the road with damage. I have been the victim of road hazard one time ,and it is not fun sitting beside the road . Seen too many other brands with reports of blowouts , want no part of them.
