toy hauler hitch weight vs wdh hitch capacity

I recently bought a brand new toy hauler 2017 powerlite 29fbxl. My truck is 2015 Ram 2500 longbed tradesman CTD.

toy hauler dry wt is about almost 8,000 lbs

my Reese wdh is rated at 12,000 lbs w/c is ok.

but the hitch weight of the trailer is about 1,384 lbs and the hitch capacity of my wdh is 1,200 lbs.

my wdh has served me for many years when i was towing 7,700 old 1997 salem TT.

Question is, do i really need to replace my wdh to a new and bigger one?

i know it's silly question but i have to ask the experts here and get this off my chest.

Thanks and happy camping

When you say hitch wt is about 1384, does that mean you have not actually scaled it? Does that hitch wt include toys loaded in rear? While it is always better to have extra capacity, I doubt it will fail being just slightly over. It seems you are looking for piece of mind, and that would mean a new hitch, if you are sure of your wts.

I agree. I would go with a 15k Trunnion style WDH. First though I would weigh the Trailer for tongue weight so your sure what it is and not what the manufacturer says it is (which it isn't) Plus for a trailer your size I would add two friction anti sway bars one on each side.. A anti rattle clamp like the one sold by Hitch Rider would be good too so you won't have any slop in the hitch...

With the WDH you have now your not getting the full benefit because it's too light for your application.

I would upgrade the hitch to have he correct capacity.

I won't move stuff around or not haul water or whatever just to be under certain weight ratings.
I buy the right equipment to do whatever I want and not think about it.

Is the 1384 actual loaded hitch weight? If so, try moving a couple hundred pounds to the rear (behind the axle). If that is not actual loaded weight, get a heavier hitch.
