Do the better tires GY Michelin fail catastrophically like the Chinese brands?
NO
But some of the Michelin B.F.Goodrich Commercial T/A's do and BFG would not warranty mine. I understand that they have replaced them with a different construction.
GY is the only one that does and will pay for non road hazard damages that I know of.

If anyone is thinking of upgrading, here's another website that I used when I upgraded our previous Mobile Suites from 16" G-rated Goodyear G614 RSTs to 17.5" Michelin XTAs. I've been extremely satisfied with their prices and service:

The other issue is that I'm sure my wheels are only 80psi so it doesn't do much good to run g's at 80psi.

But do you need 4800# capacity per tire at `125# ?
That's 19,200# of capacity.....
6K axles-------Approx. 11,500# or less weight on axles
I agree 17.5 wheels appear to be over kill.
I have 16", G rated,110 PSI Sailun's on my OEM rims
The problem is you are overloading those tires at 80psi

85psi is the minimum for the GY "G" tire. If your rig came with E's 85 is most likely the proper pressure for your rig. I went from GY "E" to GY "G" on my Avion with 80psi rims and ran 85psi with the G tires and had perfect wear with thousands of miles.
What is your tire rated at? At what psi? a g tire rated at 4085lbs at 110psi is only good for 3152lbs at 85psi
