Pardon my ignorance, and yes I have searched. I am looking at buying an air hitch and have noticed there are two head types. What is the difference between the two?
Also when buying a hitch should you go for the smallest hitch rating you need? Or are OK buying bigger so so can tow bigger in the future?
I too am looking into air hitches so have done some research. The Air Safe company has models that come with either the Valley head or the Holland-Binkley head. Other models only come with the Valley head. Those that come with the Holland-Binkley head are a couple hundred dollars more IIRC. I also ran across several forum posts in various forums where people that had the Valley head didn't care for it for some reason (not often given & I can't remember those that were), but I also ran across MANY posts that all spoke very highly of the Holland-Binkley head regarding quality of construction, reliability, positive locking in the tow condition, etc. Although I'm not sure which hitch I'll get (will be eithere the Air Safe or Trailersaver), I do know that the hitch will have the Holland-Binkley head.
As far as ratings go, I plan on going with one that has plenty of margin for weight and towing capacity. As an example, Trailersaver has a hitch model BD3 where it's pin weight rating is 3500 #. My pin weight is 3300 # so there's not much margin there. Being towards the upper range of the air bags means I have to have a high pressure in them which would give a stiffer ride on the trailer pin. The next model up in their lineup is the TS3 which has a pin rating of 4500# so this is the one I'd go with if I get a Trailersaver.
