Air Conditioning Issue

Any air conditioner techs out there or owners that have had the same problem? The front roof AC has been working fine. Today when I turned it on, the compressor keeps turning on and off and the unit never starts blowing cool air. It has only run on the generator, I don't have a 30 amp outlet to plug into, and it will eventually shut down the generator. The rear unit is working fine. Chuck

If it runs for 10 min, it should be fixed. keep the coil on top, (the condenser) clean and the fins straight, you should have good service out of it. The fan motor may go out sometime but their only around 125.00 new.

Got the parts this morning. Hooked then up and fired up the AC. Right now, all is well. Keeping my fingers crossed because nothing is usually that simple. Chuck

What you're calling "fins" are the spade terminals where the wires go.

1499-5661 is a 25 mfd 370 volt
1499-5671 is a 25 mfd 370 volt
1499-5681 is a 35 mfd 370 volt
1499-5721 is a 45 mfd 370 volt
1499-5741 is a 50 mfd 250 volt

Do you're own search for these numbers to see what their mfd is. I did the best I could to translate them with google and that drawing.


The higher voltage the better, the voltage rating usually makes the capacitor larger in size as it goes up but the higher voltage rating lets the capacitor last longer. It just has to do with it's internal insulation value. The MFD is the actual working part of the number that affects the motor inside the compressor.

The 88-108 mfd is the starting capacitor for the compressor, the 325P755H37A23N4XJ is a 7.5 mfd for the fan motor, the 3rd is the compressor run capacitor and MAY be a 25 mfd. to find out for sure you need the model and serial number for a call to Coleman. It's extremely important that it not be under sized as far as it's mfd.

Took the capacitors off the unit today. They are in bad shape and one has disintegrated. There are three. One is a black plastic with Mallory 88-108MFD 235-9847-04 165 VAC and has two "fins" in the top that are all but destroyed. The second is oblong and is a Commonwealth Sprague CSC Pt. No. 325P755H37A23N4XJ 705 MFD +/- 6% 370 VAV 50-60 HZ. The third is the problem. It's round and is so rusted there is no way to read anything off the casing. This is a Coleman Mach unit and a 1999 vintage. Does anyone have the replacement parts to use for these three? I am confused as to what will work. Doing a search gives me too many options and Im not sure which ones I need. Thanks. Chuck

There are 2 capacitor type devices in these ac units, A starting capacitor and a running capacitor. The compressor can start and run if the run capacitor is open. It will pull high amps and cut off on it's overload, as the compressor overload cools it will repeat that cycle. The capacitors are located in the side panel under the top cover. The larger metal run capacitor can have 2 or 3 terminals, if it has 3, the capacitor is a dual unit that also contains the fan capacitor. They will have marking to identify the size like 25/5 mfd if it's a dual unit, 25 mfd for the compressor and a 5 mfd for the fan. MFD stands for microfarad. If the capacitor has any distortions at all, it's bad. They typically have a arc that takes place inside the shell of the capacitor that produces gas that swells the end where the terminals are and disconnects the terminals internally. a cheap fix that will restore a ac unit to working condition most times.

I had an issue were the compressor would start and stop like the OP has. I found out the coils were dirty and not enough air could pass over the coils. I went to Home Depot and bought several cans of spray coil cleaner and that did the trick. No issue for over a year now. The front unit was the worst as it is used more.

Tat happened to one of my Carriers as well.. Will not happen to the other one as I took measures.

Worked out well though.. Camper across the way had a cracked blower cage.. It was making all sorts of noise and woried him.. We quickly tracked the problem down but late in the evening on a weekend where you going to find a replacement?

IN my basement of course.. I kept the parts I felt were salavagable when I dropped the new other make top on the rig.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

On your Intellitec system, IF the compressor is defective and is drawing excess amps, the EMS system will kick out the compressor. Doug

Thanks, I'll give those a check. Bill, the fans start up well before the compressor starts and they run uninterrupted. If this works, I will try and attach a photo of the AC controls. Chuck
