Anyone restore their counter tops?

My counter tops are looking ugly. How and what can I do to bring them back myself.

I did this with some old solid surface counter tops in my S&B home. Found a recommendation in a Google search that suggested using automobile rubbing compound. I tried it and then finished up with a Gel Gloss polish and protector that I found at Home Depot. The 30+ year old counter tops look like new now.

My sister re-did her laminate tops in her house with a product that goes on almost like paint. They actually look like granite. Can get it at HD or Lowes.

I think it was something like this:

What kind of material?
