Hello all I am in the middle of my move to Florida and I will be driving down in my 2005 Fleetwood Excursion. I am near Worcester MA so I am just thinking about hoping on 84. I would like to stay out of NY and major cities if I can avoid them without adding tons of hours to our trip. Any trip advice would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

But you wouldn't think so since they are ALWAYS working on them

Glad you had a good trip down

you will learn after a while if you travel in PA much that they "ALWAYS" need work done on their roads.!!!:B

I want to thank everyone for your help. We made the trip this past week. We went 84 81 77 26 95 to rte 4. We stopped at a TA's in Lexington, VA that had a full hook up camp ground what a great spot to rest for the night. Think it might be time for PA to do a little work on their part of 81 though, little bumpy. All in all a great trip thanks again.

Looking at the map..if you go 81 to 66 to rt 17 as was discussed....It loks as if you miss ..NY;NJ;and Tolls/Tunnels;Md;and Eastern va...you actually come out on 95 just north of Richmond......17 is the shortest cross over to 95 from 81

Now, I will go and like the 81 to 77 to Columbia,SC....but not to central Fla...

That's the way I prefer to go to the Delaware Watergap from east Central Florida. It's a pretty drive too.

I have taken the cast coast routes too - I'm not sure about it being quicker. It is definitely easier to take the more western route!

I usually take I64 from I81 then 17 South to I95. Then take I295 around Richmond. You will avoid all the East Coast City traffic.
I do 17 to US29 and then down 29. Avoids all kinds of traffic and is good running.

Don't know why anyone would get off of 81 and take 66-17 to 95 North of Richmond when its a straight shot down I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95. Don't know where you are going in FL but this will get you to Jacksonville.

Why would you want to go so far west to go east....??

Given my druthers I would avoid I95 in VA like the plague. Some of the East Coast's worst roads. All concrete riddled with tank traps and large seams. I have done both 81 and 95. 81 is much smoother pavement although there are a few spots with grades. 81 is definitely more scenic too.

I usually use the tappan zee bridge to cross the hudson.

Last year we took the 81 to 77 to 26 to 95 route and there were bumper to bumper 18 wheelers the entire lenght of 81. Much better than trying to get through NYC/Baltimore/DC on 95, though.

I did not like the long steep grade on 77 at fancy gap. We made it up/down just fine, but are one of the other routes connecting to I95 better?

yes the incline on 77 is pretty good..but I-66 to rt 17 thru Warrenton,Va is a nice 4 lane hwy and a very pretty ride thru horse country...has some traffic on 17 as you get to 95...but at least it keeps moving....
Some trucks on 81 , but I never thought they were a problem..they roll right along...Chuck
