Blowout on Goodyear G670

July 8, 2017 I was traveling to Dallas to Rangers game on I-20 in '08 American Eagle motorhome. I had just got on I-20 from Toll 49 when left front steering tire blew out. I had just passed a truck and was in left lane( probably going 70 mph)when it blew. Pulled me into median. It was all I could do to try to keep it from going straight left. How it didn't turn over, I don't know, was in there 400-500 yards before I could get it under control and eased back on Interstate and crossed over to Hwy 110 exit and parked in front of a convenience store until I could receive help. Eventually got another tire from Goodyear Commercial Service Center. Upon returning to home, app 50 miles, I took it to the body shop to have damage repaired. The owner said this was the third Goodyear G670 tire he had seen blowout in last month. I live in small town of less than 14,000 population. My tires were put on new in October, 2013. The other two guys tires were 6-7 years old. The tire Goodyear put on was a 2015 tire. Didn't see that until I got back. They would not exchange it. The tires on coach were 3 years 9 months old with 17,000 miles on them. They are supposed to have a 5 year warranty. I will be replacing all tires(including the $1180 new replacement) with Michelins. Has anyone had similar experience?

This is a topic that should be discussed and dealt with by the Motorhome manufacturers and by companies that sell them new and used. It could possibly save someone's life.

I believe you are correct. I will not put GY on any vehicle I own.

I have pressure indicators on each tire and manually check pressure before each trip. I did not run over anything. I too have heavy equipment and 10 trailers. Maintenance is top priority on all my equipment with tires on top of the list. This was clearly tire failure...Was very dissatisfied with Goodyear. The others tires are 3 years 9 months old and are all being replaced with Michelins. Thank you for your response.

I had one fail exactly the same way with 15,000 miles 4 years old goodyear would not help. They are all gone now

Had 2 blowouts on the same day, 5 years old.
I realize there will be more GY blowouts than other brands because so many GY tires on RVs out of the factory, but I truly believe there is something wrong at GY on at least this particular tire. Especially the 19.5 size tire. I don't have any more GY brand tires on my motorhome either. Not even the spare tire.

I watched the planned blowouts video by Michelin. That is not the way mine happened. Mine went more like the one pulling red pickup, if you have seen that one, except I did not turn over. . Pulled straight to the left down into median and you do pickup speed going down slope off of interstate into median. Their depiction is nothing like what happens in real life, at least not in my case.
I would urge everyone that drives a motor home to view as many videos as possible and read all you can to try and prepare yourself for a blowout . I hope you never have to go through it. I was very fortunate. As stated earlier, I will be installing a Safe-T-Steer on my coach before it comes out of body shop. Safe travels.

I watched the video where the guy went into the median and eventually flipped the coach. I watched that video 'frame-by-frame' and if you look very close, it was not the blowout that caused him to flip.

The guy had the coach under control in the center of the median. It was the guard-rail wire that grabbed under the coach that caused it to flipped. Right before he flips, you can see the 'wire' snap the ground causing a cloud of dust. At that point, the coach pulls severely to the left then laying on it's side. I totally believe those are the most dangerous type of guard-rails.

Safe travels,
MM.

The Michelin tires that have sidewall failures were the XRV model. These tires have two ply sidewalls for a cushy ride. When my left front Mich XRV blew the sidewall, I thank God that I put an old "knuckle knob" on the steering wheel. Mich decided not to help replace the defective tire. They did tell me that they were a tire wholesaler and does NOT have suggested retail prices. I was so happy with that conversation, I ran out and bought Toyo's. Not the least bit sorry for that decision.
Toyo now has a plant in the US.

Ours were NOT XRVs, they were Michelins latest and greatest at the time, XZA2 Green maybe???

I watched that tire and Michelin changed the specs on it 3 times in 1 year.

IMO the consumers were doing the field testing - I could be wrong...or not. :W
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

Bridgestone was my second choice, perhaps should have been first.

yes I have a tag axle, did not help in my instance. '08 American Eagle 43' with tag, 43,600lb +tow vehicle. Felt like it picked up speed as I left Interstate. Hope you don't have to go thru it. I certainly don't want to again. Thanx for feedback.

Interesting last sentence. If the second part of first half of sentence is correct then this could be for my heirs to deal with. I feel better.

To OP, glad you are OK and survived the incident with only damage to the coach.

Just curious, is your coach a tag axle coach? It has been suggested that longer, tag axle coaches will handle better...more easy to keep straight in a steer tire blowout. Don't know if it is true and hope to never find out.

Having had specific training on this and many other driving scenarios (Honda Marysville OH has a GREAT training area....), you usually want to give slight power when a front blowout occurs IF it helps in controlling the vehicle. Every vehicle and scenario is different. Never mash on the go-pedal. Never, never, never hit the brakes. Slight power application is recommended if you are pulling a trailer, or have front wheel drive, then coast down to lower speed and pull off.

The Michelin video is good, you'll be OK as long as you don't hit the gas so hard you attempt to accelerate, or hit the brakes, or otherwise cannot control the vehicle (lost control of the steering wheel, shifting load, etc). BTW, the controlling interest in these types of videos comes from their legal department. It may or may not be the best advice, but the advice that is defensible in a law suit.
