Electrical Question

I have my Progressive Industries Surge Guard installed after my Automatic Transfer Switch. My line voltage, as read according to my PI surge guard, is 119 - 120v at 0 amps being used, but drops to 113-115v at 23 amps used (air conditioner). The drop is only on the line w/ the air conditioner. My generator was supplying the power.

Is this normal? If not, what should I consider for troubleshooting purposes?

Recently, while at a park with 50A service, the power in was showing 110 to 115v. When we turned on our air the voltage dropped so that the surge guard cut power to the coach (automatically cuts power at less than 105 volts).

I suspected an issue with the park's power, since the trouble was always during the afternoon when everyone was running their air. Earlier or later, the power was not an issue.

I am not an electrical guru, so I am just trying to understand whether or not I have a problem and where to start looking to solve it.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Not necessarily so. If the SP line going to the mh is inadequate you could see a voltage drop when the A/C is running. With a 0 amp draw on the ac line I would expect to see a somewhat higher voltage. Simple Ohms Law.

An inadequate line going to the mh would act the same as if you used a long or small gauge extension cord. Check the input voltage to PI unit. If voltage drop is the same as the PI unit reads, then the power cord attached to the mh is droping the voltage or the SP is dropping the voltage. Have a qualified electrician check you SP voltage.

Since you are not electrical, I would suggest you tighten all electrical connections at the transfer switch first. Not sure your readings are abnormal.
A 5 volt drop at 23 amps says there is a 0.22 ohm resistance in the line.

Check screws first and generator connections up front.

Let us know what you find. May want to get an electrical person to help you.

The voltage should'nt drop when you put a load on the line unless you have a loose connection or undersized wiring. You may want to check the condition of the contact points on the transfer switch and the air conditioning circuit. Is the air conditioner drawing 23 amps itself? If so, 23 seems a bit high.

Yes as 110V is low low and as soon as u put a load like AC it will drop off so seeing your 119 drop to 113 is normal.Mine does simlar things
Now i have to edit and say I see this as iam plugged into a 120V 15 amp outlet through a #12 100 foot cord !!!
